Course Description

Provides specific intermediate hands-on techniques and practices used in creating costume pieces that are crafted rather than sewn. Explores a variety of materials to design and complete elements for a Theatre Arts production. Prerequisites: MTH 20. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Use crafting skills to complete alterations that may be used in a Theatre Arts production.
  2. Choose, implement, and manipulate appropriate materials to fabricate a character's unique costume or prop.
  3. Utilize and manipulate selected costume craft materials to alter the look, feel, and fit of a specific garment.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to time-manage multiple projects for a single production.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student will be assessed on management of applied techniques and craftsmanship leading to the delivery of multiple projects assigned.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

By doing the assigned tasks in the packet, the student will be able to:
         
     A.   Perform a variety of manual material manipulations in order to support the creation of a non-traditional craft-based costume piece.
     B.   Operate a dye vat.
     C.   Measure, cut, sew or otherwise manipulate and fit a basic non-traditional fabric pattern on another person.
    
By participating in the class, the student will observe, note, mirror analyze, plan and contribute to the process of mounting the costumes for that term's production.  This experience will vary according to the costuming demands of the term (which change with each production, though many skills are transferable, they may manifest and need to be adjusted to meet the current need (an example would be learning to hand-sew using a simple fabric like cotton or muslin in a 100 level version, where the medium (such as leather, Tyvek, felt) may change, as so would the tools (replacing a traditional needle with non-traditional tools such as an awl, hacksaw or heat gun) for the purpose of altering more challenging and unique material choices.

The student would utilize or adapt given Pattern Development, Construction, Fitting and Alterations, skills to variable crafted costume projects, this may include Dyeing and Painting, or using numerous found or gathered materials in the creation of Costume and Costume Accessories.
    
By reading, independent researching and video viewing, the student will begin to understand the unique application of non-traditional materials and methods in lieu of traditional fabrics for the creation of a theatre (or other) costume.  

Content varies and is based upon the current theatre production, costume to be constructed, and student's skills and interests.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have satisfactorily accomplished the goals and objectives listed in the course content guide.  Course content guides are developed by college wide faculty and approved by management.
