A little about me
I have been working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families for the past 13 years. I enjoy working with families and ECE students developing strategies for preventing challenging behaviors, learning about different parenting styles, and the impact of culture on children’s behavior. PCC is very supportive of cultural values and I’m proud to call the Child Development Center my second home. Currently, I’m a Senior Child Development Specialist-Mentor Teacher in the Grasshopper classroom. Under an anti-bias approach, I enjoy supporting and guiding children during developmentally appropriate play based instruction, routines, implementing and planning the daily activities and culturally responsive curriculum.
My goal as a mentor teacher is to motivate our future educators to be collaborative with the families and integrate relevant learning experiences connected to children’s lives and culture when building their curriculum.
I love this work because I want to positively impact the future generations and raise social justice awareness in ECE. My Purpose is to see my future students become successful people living in a society that is more tolerant, accepting and celebratory of cultural, social and physical differences. Outside of work I love spending time with my husband, daughter and our dog. Our family enjoys cooking, arts and crafts and traveling back and forth to our hometowns so our daughter can experience and learn about our cultures.
I’m looking forward to working with you as a support team in your child’s growth and development.

A little about me
Hello, Everyone. You can call me MJ.
I am an Early Childhood Education Teacher & Child Development Specialist that has been teaching in toddler and preschool classrooms at PCC Sylvania’s Child Development Center Lab School since 2018.
My experience in Early Education spans over 15 years, including seven years as a preschool teacher in Portland, teaching preschool children internationally in Germany, Portugal, and Tanzania, and teaching in Early Head Start and Head Start programs.
As an early childhood educator I am dedicated to collaborating with children & families in the innate pursuit of learning, with a specialized focus on emergent curriculum, making connections, and building upon early childhood social-emotional awareness & social skills.
Facilitating meaningful classroom experiences through being responsive to children’s interests and working in partnership with children, families, teachers, and the community is my goal. Using anti-bias practice, I strive to provide adaptable approaches that center culture, community, accessibility, and respect for diverse perspectives.
Currently I am studying Education and Social Sciences at Portland State University, and will be entering into the Graduate Teaching Education program.
I am Mexican American/Latine/Xicanx, and grew up between Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA.
