4 Credit Conversion Sub-Committee Report

HST 201, 202, 203Hearing before Full Committee

Recommended by sub-committee on Dec. 8, 2004

Not Recommended by Vice-President of Academic and Student Services

Kendra introduced the situation to everyone present. She then recounted the rationale from Guy Sievert for not recommending the conversion for the US History courses. The issue is focused around using three 4 credit courses to cover US history in the in the converted sequence. Students would not be exposed to the full scope of US history if they take only two courses (which satisfied the sequence requirement of our AAOT degree)

The question was raised about transferability of two courses as opposed to all three courses. PSU does not require US History for any of their degrees, so having the full sequence does not appear to be an issue. Clackamas Community College has had their sequence as three 4-cerdit courses for four years and HST 203 has been one of their more popular courses. Students tend to take all three course regardless of the requirements. The feeling is that students who are interested in history will and do continue taking history courses.

If the sequence is reduced to two of the three courses having 201 and 202 would be the best choice as far as transferability. This is especially true for students who are planning to be teachers, and this should be noted for advising. HST 203 does not transfer well on it own.

A faculty person at PSU was approached about this issue and supported PCC making the conversion.

Classes are being planned as 4 hour blocks as well as hybrid classes. A few sections will be offered as two, two hour class sessions.
