Dominique: Life and Death in Ancient Italy

Studying History of Architecture in Rome
Hello! I’m Dominique, a college student at Portland Community College, determined to build a brighter future for myself through the pursuit of an education. After nearly a decade away from school, marked by housing insecurity, multiple unstable jobs I took for survival reasons, and personal setbacks, I returned to school in my late twenties, ready to work hard, receive an education, and reclaim my dreams. I have been accepted into the program to study ancient history in Italy this summer. This program will immerse me in Italy’s rich cultural history and vibrant art scene, and align directly with my academic focus on architecture with a minor in Italian language as I transition to a four-year university from Portland Community College.

Kayla: Japanese Language in Japan
My name is Kayla. I am 26 years old and live in Beaverton, Oregon. I have a dream of traveling to Japan. When I was in middle school, I had the goal of being a game developer and living in Tokyo, so in high school, I started dedicating myself to learning the language and learning how to draw, design, and program. Although I don’t plan on being a game dev anymore, I still study Japanese at Portland Community College, still holding onto the dream of visiting—maybe even living in—Japan.

Frankie: Peace and Conflict in Iceland & Ireland
As a nontraditional student at a community college, I never thought I would have the chance to study abroad. As I prepare to transfer to a four year university to continue my journey in social research and community care, I am seeking every opportunity to engage with diverse communities and cultures, public policy, and the historical challenges around autonomy and self-determination that shape our social landscape to this day. That’s why I am thrilled to have been accepted into the Peace and Conflict in Iceland & Ireland study abroad program at Portland Community College!

Aidan: Community and Public Health in Croatia
Hello! My name is Aidan. I am a college student, and I recently got into my dream summer study abroad program in Croatia, studying community and public health. The program will allow me to learn from public health experts, conduct project-based research on a public health topic of my choice, and learn about all the factors that contribute to community health and health disparities. The program is short-term, but it will greatly impact my educational journey and goals.
Felix: Community and Public Health in Croatia
Hello! My name is Felix Lilly, and I am deeply passionate about pursuing a career in medicine, specifically radiation therapy, and public health. Today, I’m reaching out with a heartfelt request for your support in helping me achieve my dream of studying abroad in Croatia. This isn’t just a personal dream—it’s a chance to make a life-changing difference in the lives of those who need it most.
In 2007, I suffered a personal brain injury that changed the course of my life. I spent months recovering, battling against the odds, and pushing through pain and uncertainty. It was a long, difficult journey, but in my recovery, I discovered a deeper appreciation for the power of healing and the importance of supporting others through their toughest battles.
Ray: Community and Public Health in Croatia
Studying abroad for me is an epic opportunity. I am now going to school to study Human Services and Counseling. People are not getting the help that they need and I see it every day. This Public Health Study Abroad class will be epic for me because it gives me an opportunity to learn how another country operates their Health and Human Services. It will also give me a chance to get out of my country for the first time ever and celebrate my birthday overseas.
