For this project we collaborated with biology students and created artwork inspired by their Covid 19 research. I meditated on the information presented to me by my biology group and started this piece with intuitive mark-making. As a starting point, I wrote a message of hope in large, looping cursive with charcoal and ink on a primed canvas. I added layers of color as I turned the canvas around on all four sides until a figure and landscape appeared. In the final stages I added the diagram-like lines not only to direct the eyes on an unescapable journey but also to put an emphasis on how reliant we all were on daily updates of scientific data, in the form of graphs and charts, for decision making and for our own well being. This piece represents how I was personally processing the bits and pieces of information I was receiving at the beginning of the pandemic.
