Emerson Mitchell | “Roland”

This watercolor painting was created for a project involving multiple repeating forms or patterns. My main focus with this piece was to create a surreal but intense atmosphere. To achieve this I used multiple juxtaposed elements: the head and hands are not attached to any visible body, the leaves aren't connected to any larger plant. The background is also non-representational and was created through wet-into-wet watercolor techniques. I wanted the main figure to feel confrontational and ominous, so I focused the gaze outwards towards the viewer and added a red-eyed effect into the pupils.
