This ceramic sculpture was in response to an "artifact" assignment, asking what we would want discovered centuries from now. Traditional markers of "society" have often been large monuments, celebrating those in power, often overlooking the rest of us. Given the biodegradability (and thereby fragility) of Chinese food (and thereby identity), I wanted to capture pieces of my culture in ways that would memorialize and honor our existence. The white takeout box is typically a flimsy throwaway. Here it is prominent and black. The three dumplings are pleated to recognize the variations in Chinese food, showcasing the nuance to the mainstream monolithic viewpoint.
