Toren Kossow | “What We Show”

I created this mask for a class project centered around using recycled objects to create a mask from the prompt ‘the masks we wear’. Using pieces from previous art projects and found materials such as yarn, clay, cardboard, and plastic, I focused on showing how a mask can both strip away parts of ourselves (skin and muscle from bone) and add things that are not accurate portrayals (the overgrowth of skin, eyes where they should not be, and irregular bone growth). It represents how incomplete or inaccurate portrayals can drastically change how we are perceived by the outside world and how we perceive ourselves as well as the pain and suffering required to remove parts of oneself and forcing other parts that do not belong in order to fit.
