Sarah Lopez | “The Stone’s Keeper”

This is a character inspired by the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rat and by the works of James Jean. I imagined the head and body as two symmetrical spheres that I could subtract from a ball of clay. I focused on contours, positive and negative spaces, and imitated the look of flowing fabric by creating folds on the robe-like garment. The Stone's Keeper depicts a noble and stoic demeanor on its face. I used smooth and rough texture tools to carve the snout, and added nylon thread to create whiskers. It holds a Jasper stone which serves as a focal point for the sculpture and represents balance.

The frame is black and inside are earthen elements including semiprecious gemstones, shells, moss, an Egyptian statue at the bottom center of the box, overlapping yarn and bamboo on the inner plane, and, at the top of the sculpture, a beetle encased in resin surrounded by dried foliage.
