This portrait of my late Auntie was a practice of holding grief and creativity in the same space. Her own sculpting tools were used and a final visual was not planned as the act of making was prioritized over aiming for a finished product. Her hair poof, industrial piercings, and resting smile are key details in recreating her likeness. A floral, petal-like base refers to the flowery mixed-media sculptures she used to make. The use of a pink stain idolizes her love for body positivity and the symbolism of the color in Janelle Monáe song, “PYNK.”
