In painting an image of his bedroom in Arles, Van Gogh took a 3-dimensional object and portrayed it in 2-dimensional format. When I first thought of recreating the painting as a ceramics piece, I thought I would simply reverse engineer it and turn it back into a rectangular box. As I explored the painting, though, I discovered that Van Gogh did not use a simple linear perspective. The chair and table do not adhere to the one-point perspective of the bed, for instance. So the most fun part of this project was playing with the space between 2-D and 3-D to arrive at something that, I hope, conveys the slightly unsettling feeling that Van Gogh conveys.
