This image was created as part of a portrait/self portrait assignment where I interrogated how personal artifacts influence perception. As someone with a cochlear implant, I spend most of my time with a visual indicator of my hearing loss on the side of my head. Without a battery this implant only weighs 3.9 grams, and yet it's able to influence a person's perception of me in a split second. With this image I wanted to explore how personal artifacts, like my implant, are able to influence perception and the role these artifacts play in forming a "genuine" perception of a person.
