Medical Assisting: Fieldwork
Fieldwork requirements
Health profession student clinical training administrative requirements
In order for students to complete the required clinical training, PCC requires all students to meet the Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) Chapter 409 – Division 30 for students in clinical training prior to clinical placement. Students are to meet any requirements mandated by their clinical site as well. A detailed description of these requirements are listed in the requirements for clinical and field education. They include:
- Successfully pass a criminal background check
- Successfully pass a ten-panel drug screen
- Submit proof of current immunizations
- CPR certification: Students are required to obtain and maintain current certification in BLS (CPR) for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association.
- Complete Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen compliance training modules.
All of these requirements and due dates are outlined during orientation and students will receive guidance throughout the program for completing each requirement prior to externship. The HIPAA training is provided during MA 117 – Medical Office Administrative Procedures course and the Bloodborne Pathogen training is provided during MA 120 – Intro to Phlebotomy course.
The MA program uses the third-party vendor, CastleBranch to collect immunization and CPR certification documentation and conduct the background check and drug screen. Students are required to purchase these services and the program has no control over any cost adjustments.
Please note: Students who do not pass the criminal background check may not be eligible to complete training at affiliated practicum sites, to sit for certification exams, or be hired for some professional positions.

Transportation requirements
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from clinical practicum sites. Students must have transportation to facilities throughout the Portland metropolitan area and surrounding communities. Clinical practicum selection process, schedules, and other specific details will be given to students at the required clinical practicum orientation.
Students are supervised while in clinic by an assigned preceptor. Students are not to be substituted for paid staff.
