About Sterile Processing Technician Training

The Portland Community College Sterile Processing Technician program offers comprehensive training and hands-on experience to prepare students for careers as sterile processing technicians. Upon successful completion of our program, students can work towards obtaining provisional certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).

Once employed and working in a sterile processing department, students can work towards completing the 400 hours required for full certification (described in the link above) through HSPA.

Mission and values

The mission of Portland Community College’s Sterile Processing Technician program is to prepare individuals to be vital members of healthcare teams through rigorous academic studies and hands-on training partnerships with local hospitals. Emphasizing essential skills like communication, professionalism, critical thinking, and a positive attitude, our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to excel as confident and capable healthcare professionals.

The program offers students of all ages, races, cultures, economic levels, and previous educational experience opportunities for personal growth and attainment of their professional goals. Through effective teaching and student support, we strive to prepare our students for success as individuals, businesses, and healthcare professionals.

Program goal

The goal of the Portland Community College Sterile Processing Technician program is to prepare sterile processing technicians who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) to become a strong, confident, and capable working professional within the healthcare community.

Accreditation

Program accreditation and oversight

The Portland Community College Sterile Processing Technician program adheres closely to the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) guidelines and is designed to deliver high-quality education to students.

  • Tuition: $1,498 including supplies
  • Required books: $125
  • CastleBranch service fees:
    • Background check/drug screen: $130
    • Immunization records: $30
    • HIPAA and OSHA compliance modules: $30

Additional immunization fees may apply depends on individual’s health records.
