Nature and Scope of Work

Under the direction of facilities service management, refinishes and paints a variety of surfaces throughout the physical plant of the school which includes responsibility for all aspects of a job from planning to completion. Areas of accountability include: knowledge of paint materials and application techniques, independently planning and scheduling of various projects, estimating and ordering necessary supplies and equipment, use and maintenance of required tools and equipment, and completion of projects with minimum supervision. Interacts primarily with college personnel regarding work requests, peers in immediate work group and vendors. Job requires well-developed verbal skills to present or exchange technical or complex information. Incumbent is a key contributor with work results impacting the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of further results beyond the immediate work section. Responsible for producing journey-level work output on an independent basis.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Performs journey-level painting of interior and exterior areas according to work plan and as weather permits. Prepares paints, varnishes or resurfaces a variety of interior and exterior surfaces including walls, desks, bulletin boards, chairs, ceilings, signs and road striping.
  2. Plans work activities on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Prioritizes work requests for completion in a timely manner. Redirects efforts when painting operations conflict with the operations of facilities or the health of staff and students. Keeps management appraised of work to be undertaken in their area; modifies work plan to meet operational needs.
  3. Plans the annual painting program for the District and assists in development of the annual budget for this area. Evaluates the cost effectiveness of products and methods of application in order to maintain the best value for the college district.
  4. Supervises the work of contractors, professional laborers and other help including student and semi-skilled workers, both for the maintenance of existing facilities and for new project work
  5. Estimates and orders supplies for requested work from designated supplier. Maintains an appropriate level of inventory of essential supplies.
  6. Researches new products and methods, keeping current with new technology and selects the best products for each application. Maintains product records and records of the time work is done for future reference.
  7. Operates and maintains equipment such as pressure washer, paint sprayer, brushes, and a variety of mobile indoor and outdoor heavy equipment most of which is used in confined spaces and in close proximity to staff and students.
  8. Works in a safe manner, maintaining work areas in a safe condition during and after work projects. Uses proper safety techniques related to chemicals, equipment and work methods.
  9. Responds to emergency repair needs; and to college emergencies including adverse weather to secure college buildings, furnishings and fixtures as needed.
  10. Responds to phone, pager, Email, voicemail, verbal and written work orders.
  11. Assists in other maintenance jobs as needed.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Normally there are staff, faculty and students present in and around the work area and quite often work must be performed around existing furniture and/or equipment. May work in high places requiring the use of scaffolding, high lift or ladder. Works in confined spaces; around and over the tops of trees, bushes and equipment; and under and over heat ducts, electric lights, water pipes and other objects hung from ceilings and walls. Exposure to high levels of paint fumes and other work related chemicals occurs on a regular basis. Work is quite often performed in areas that are hot and/or impacted by sun glare (e..g, work near ceiling areas and during the summer in outdoor areas in full sun). The Painter must stay abreast of new products, technologies and methods of application.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 60 pounds safely. Must have the ability to: stand in one position for extended periods of time; work off ladders, scaffolding, high lifts, step ladders and in close and confined spaces for extended periods of time; work in an environment with chemical fumes without adverse reaction, operate a high lift and other mechanical devises needed to reach high work; and to operate and maintain mechanized painting equipment such as compressors and spray guns. Work involves reaching and repetitive motion.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience as a journey level painter. Demonstrated ability to use and maintain power painting equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of paint materials and methods of application. Must have a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Oregon and possess an acceptable driving record. Must be able to work on an independent basis.
