Veterinary Technician Program Specialist
Class: Academic Professional | Exempt status: Exempt | Level: 3
Under the direction of management, the Veterinary Technician Program Specialist is responsible for coordination of animal care, facilities and equipment maintenance, and kennel organization and records. Assists with laboratory sessions including preparation, inventory, and tracking of supplies. Participates in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) responsibilities, such as reporting and compliance. Acts as a point of contact and liaison for the Veterinary Technology Program.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Works closely with veterinarians to coordinate medical care for all animals. Triage all animal emergencies for optimal care with assistance from other veterinarian staff.
- Collaborates with outside organizations for animal acquisition, adoptions, and disposition. Maintains accurate records for all program animals.
- Collects information and completes reports to meet US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regulations.
- Assists with IACUC responsibilities including attending IACUC meetings and inspections, and ensuring compliance with IACUC requirements.
- Coordinates facilities and equipment maintenance. Ensures equipment is current and operational. Troubleshoots and makes recommendations as needed.
- Responsible for inventory tracking and ordering supplies for animal care and veterinary labs.
- In coordination with staff, develops student animal care schedules.
- Assists and instructs veterinary classes. Prepares course materials and setup of labs. Provides oversight of lab activities and assists with lab clean up, including ensuring the area is sanitized and available for the next class.
- Participates in hiring, scheduling, and supervising casual, student employees and work study students.
- Assist with community outreach, student recruitment, job, or career fairs.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is often performed in a variety of settings, often a lab or outdoor environment, caring for animals. Work hours vary with the season and requirements of the farm, livestock and programs. Requires occasional physical effort such as lifting, digging, handling of large animals and extensive walking/standing.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) Degree or the equivalent in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited institution. Five (5) years of experience working in a veterinary hospital, clinic, research facility or equivalent. State of Oregon Certification as a licensed Veterinary Technician (CVT), or license-eligible with license acquired prior to initial teaching assignment.

- Work effectively with diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and third-party contractors.
