Nature and Scope of Work

The Occupational Cluster Coordinator is responsible for planning, developing and implementing customized training programs for a diverse student population in the Corrections Education Department. In coordination with corrections staff and business partners, the position works to identify critical curriculum components to enhance job placement at the completion of training. The position provides leadership in the identification and development of career pathways in Occupational Cluster areas that will provide better access to living wage jobs for students with a history of incarceration. Developing appropriate curriculum and materials and instructing students comprises other key elements of the position.

Incumbents work with employers and partners across the region to develop and support classroom training activities, experiential training opportunities and work-based learning to identify occupational cluster areas. The position is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the external and internal partnerships and business relationships that are critical to the training program.

Principal Duties

  1. Facilitates the development of non-credit occupation cluster training programs for the Corrections Education Department. Duties include development of curriculum, assessment methods, skill standards, competencies for completion and student evaluation methods. Coordinates with business and program partners to evaluate results and to initiate changes as needed.
  2. Provides instruction to a diverse population of students enrolled in Occupational Cluster training programs through the Corrections Education Department
  3. Works with business partners and corrections staff to develop and provide ongoing coordination for work experience/internship program for students enrolled in Occupation Cluster training.
  4. Liaises with other Workforce Development/Corrections Education staff and partners to develop a plan of action for enrolled students. Updates Corrections Counselors on student compliance with Incarceration Plan.
  5. Serves as an advocate in monitoring and assessing the progress of students to ensure their training/employment/education requirements are being met. Maintains records and documents student progress.
  6. In partnership with other program staff, provides student services such as an explanation of the policies, procedures and processes. Orients students to facilities and equipment. Distributes appropriate instructional materials, and set-up assistance.
  7. Coordinates with PCC departments (e.g. CIS/CAS, Medical Technology, Distance Learning, Engineering, etc.) in developing collaborative courses, new methods of instruction and career pathways once inmates are out of prison.
  8. Coordinates placement activities and post-employment/retention tracking with Corrections Workforce Development/Education Department staff and partners.
  9. Works with the college Curriculum Development office to obtain course numbers and approval of new courses.
  10. Participates in program planning especially as it relates to training programs.
  11. Stays current on emerging trends in business and industry. Participates in professional development.
  12. Coordinates with staff and management regarding computers, equipment, and facilities issues.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in an office/classroom environment both in a corrections facility and in off-site training areas. Incumbents regularly drive between campuses and remote sites, requiring the ability to drive and use of a personal vehicle. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.

Physical Requirements

Moderate physical exertion. Frequent standing or walking. Occasional lifting of equipment used in training that may weigh up to 30 lbs. required.

Minimum Qualifications

Depending on the specific occupational cluster the position may require the following:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communication, Psychology, Social Science, or occupational related field. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

OR

Professional/Trade certificate(s) and/or license(s) for designated occupational cluster.

Demonstrated experience in an educational or training environment is required. Demonstrated experience working with at-risk and/or culturally diverse populations. Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of industry and/or workforce training. Must have working knowledge of workforce development issues or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Knowledge of:
  • Considerable knowledge of business and industry and current labor market trends.
  • Knowledge of college procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of effective training techniques and learning theory.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal rules and regulations impacting the corrections field.

  • Skill in the development and delivery of industry related training, workplace communication, student assessment and evaluation, curriculum development and job skills training.
