Nature and Scope of Work
The Online Development Facilitator is responsible for working with online learning management to set and meet achievable goals for the sustainable growth of online learning. The facilitator works closely with faculty and other college staff to develop and expand online course offerings. The incumbent works with other faculty to develop courses based around learning outcomes, to select and use appropriate media and activities, to create and maintain a faculty community, to teach faculty to use appropriate tools and to seek feedback from faculty and identify issues relating to online instruction. The incumbent also participates in the selection and implementation of new teaching tools.
Principal Accountabilities
- Acts as the primary contact and assists Faculty with the development and delivery of online learning courses based around learning outcomes, including content, design and technical course preparation; selection of appropriate media and learning activities; identification, selection and application of appropriate assessment tools and strategies as needed by Faculty; development and technical support to offer online courses; resolving problems related to their courses.
- Teaches others to use online learning technologies and strategies.
- Designs and presents Faculty development programs.
- Identifies, develops and offers training and teaches Faculty to use online course tools and teaching strategies.
- Identifies other Faculty resources and works with college departments or other organizations to make resources available to Faculty teaching online classes.
- Creates and facilitates online Faculty community or network for online instructors; seeks feedback from Faculty; identifies issues related to instruction; develops mentor programs.
- Assists other online learning and college staff to produce appropriate instructional material.
- Stays current on online learning, online educational trends, changes, developments and teaching strategies.
- Meets quarterly course development timelines and works closely with other development staff as needed to support online courses.
- Acts as a liaison between Faculty and Technical support staff.
- Assists in the development of policies, practices and standards, which facilitate the effective use of online learning technologies in instruction (this may include development of guidelines, standards, templates, handbooks, etc.).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position-Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Online Accessibility
Positions with an accessibility focus may also be responsible for:
- Planning and facilitating the implementation of online course accessibility standards by conducting course reviews, providing faculty training, testing interactive learning materials, and coordinating the conversion of printed, digital, video and multimedia material into a variety of alternate media formats to meet Web Accessibility Guidelines.
- Interpreting and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws as they apply to disability and accessibility in post-secondary online courses.
- Acting as a resource for staff and faculty throughout the college by providing technical assistance and guidance on how to accommodate and ensure equal access for students in online courses.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office environment. Work also involves sitting at a computer for extended periods of time.
Physical Requirements
Physical exertion is not a normal responsibility of this classification.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education, Instructional Technology, Distance Education, Computer Science or a related field required. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated experience working with faculty at the post secondary level required. Must have experience in developing online classes and experience with multimedia development and production tools required. Creation of instructional material for the internet and familiarity with technologies as they relate to online learning and the internet is required.
Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications
Positions with a focus on Accessibility require Bachelor’s degree in Education, Rehabilitation, Social Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Instructional Technology, Online Education, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Two years of experience evaluating and adapting online materials to meet accessibility standards. Two years of experience working with faculty or staff in a professional capacity in a post-secondary institution (includes employment as a student worker).
