Job Summary
The Teacher Cohort Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and implementing the overall recruitment and retention strategies for underrepresented students of color pursuing the teaching profession. The incumbent is responsible for actively coordinating efforts between the Beaverton School District, Portland Public Schools, Portland State University, and PCC ensuring that student issues are addressed. The incumbent will market the program, working closely with middle and high school programs, as well as acting as an internal liaison between both higher education institutions. This position requires active case management of students currently enrolled in the program including providing student and family advocacy, advising, and counseling as needed.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates and implements the recruitment of targeted groups of students of color into the teaching profession for Beaverton School District, Portland Public Schools, Portland State University, and PCC. Works closely with community leaders and school officials in developing and implementing appropriate strategies.
- Markets the Teacher Program, working closely with middle and high school programs. Travels through the state of Oregon to promote the program. Writes newsletters to keep businesses, key leaders, politicians, and faculty aware of program issues.
- Works with businesses in raising funds for scholarship programs. Researches and identifies various funding sources; writes program grants, manages grant funds and Teacher Program budget.
- Manages an active caseload of enrolled students, both at PCC and at Portland State University. Provides student and family advocacy; general advising, job search assistance, and counseling as needed. Refers students to community agencies based on identified need.
- Facilitates quarterly colloquia for program students. Coordinates guest speakers and table discussion topics.
- Develops and implements program policies and procedures. Actively participates in professional organizations and committees at the local and state level in advocating for teacher reform.
- Directs the work of casual and student workers as grant monies allow. Screens, interviews, selects, and trains employees.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work environment includes frequent disruptions and changes in priorities. Work is generally performed in an office environment. Working hours may vary and occasional evening or weekend work is required. Frequent travel to other locations is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
Demonstrated experience working in or with Education Equity programs. Demonstrated experience working with students of color. Experience in project and case management. Experience working in post-secondary and secondary education settings desirable.
