Job Summary

Responsible for the technical implementation and logistical operation of the online class system for the College. Performs system operator functions including assigning and managing user accounts and course directories. Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves a variety of software problems. Coordinates all aspects of the distributed learning programs to ensure high quality service and access for faculty, students and staff. May direct and review the work of student workers and casual employees.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs the creation, administration, configuration of accounts, course shells and directories, and ensures software licensing compliance for online classes.
  2. Coordinates technical logistics and implementation on all distance education classes college-wide.  Ensures Banner data integrates with course sites and resolves problems. Develops, implements and documents procedures for operation of the distance education program.
  3. Coordinates requests for new courses between Distance Education, Curriculum Support Office and Academic departments.  Creates individual faculty “Letters of Agreement” for course development including timelines, stipend amounts, course review and training dates, and course specific development terms.
  4. Manages distance education database to track training, delivery of courses, stipends, etc.  Works with consultant on database modifications and upgrades.
  5. Identifies faculty training needs and schedules appropriate training to facilitate quality online instruction.  Provides one-on-one training to faculty as needed. Gives presentations to other college staff, students and departments about distance education programs.
  6. Works with Distance Education Programming Coordinator to ensure accurate information is included in the college class schedule each term. Serves as back up to Distance Education Programming Coordinator.
  7. Coordinates special projects with PCC departments and other statewide colleges for online instructional programs.
  8. Identifies, troubleshoots and/or resolves software problems.  Modifies software configurations and assists faculty in resolving problems.
  9. Provides technical support to students and faculty for course management software courses by telephone, email or face-to-face. Support may include online help, training, conferences, development of user support handouts, web pages, etc.
  10. Responds to system outages/emergencies affecting delivery of online instruction.  Interfaces with PCC technical staff and outside vendors to resolve problems with the online course system. Works closely with other instructional medial staff to support online classes.
  11. Coordinates upgrades of course management system. Provides the necessary technical support for successful upgrades without loss of service or instructional time.
  12. Supports software for faculty and students, on campus and at home.  Software may include standard office applications, HTML editors, web browsers, course management software and other course management tools, electronic communication software, graphics software, operating systems, email applications, etc.
  13. Works on special course management software projects to supplement courses including the integration of various medial on to CD-ROM and Power Point presentations.
  14. Coordinates and approves room reservations for the distant education computer lab. Works with other technical staff for software installations and repairs.
  15. Provides feedback to instructional technology staff and distance education staff regarding services and tools to improve quality.
  16. Creates and maintains user lists, produces newsletters and other types of informational communication between faculty and students.
  17. Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree or two years of college level course work or training in a computer-related discipline. Relevant experience may substitute for the college level course work on a year-for-year basis.

Two years of experience required in all or some of the following: desktop/personal computers, operating systems and course management systems; Internet, Web Page design, mainframe technologies, printers and terminals.

Knowledge of:

Current computer software packages which may include HTML editors, web browsers, email online conferencing, MS Office, database systems, and computer operating systems. Internet based services such as electronic mail, WWW, browser and other LAN and data communications hardware and software.

Ability to:

Learn new software and communicate technical information to students and staff with a wide range of computer experience. Analyze and resolve problems with minimal supervision.  Interact effectively with students, staff and the public.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a standard office environment and exposure to video display terminals occurs on a regular basis. Technological changes require occasional skill level upgrades.

Minimal physical exertion is required. The job involves prolonged periods of sitting at a computer terminal and learned physical skill is required for keyboarding and use of computer tools.
