Nature and Scope of Work

Under the direction of Bookstore management, performs customer services activities and assists in the maintenance of campus bookstores. Operates cash registers and helps customers with purchases, assists in the shipping/receiving/transfer of merchandise from one site to another and ensures merchandise is properly displayed. Incumbent employs well developed communication skills to present and exchange information which may be technical or complex. Interacts regularly with students, faculty, other college staff and the general public. Responsible for producing journey-level work output with work results impacting the immediate work section.

Individuals assigned to this job classification receive support and/or direction from central bookstore staff at Sylvania regarding operational matters such as the shipping, receiving and transfer of merchandise. Position incumbents generally support a small off-site location not full service in scope, or work as part of a larger group of employees who support the Sylvania operation.

Principal Accountabilities (includes some or all of the following)

  1. Operates cash register and assists customers with purchasing items. Verifies checks and processes credit card purchases.
  2. Individuals working in branch sites request additional general merchandise supplies for their site from Sylvania store.
  3. Receives, checks and counts books and other merchandise shipped from Sylvania or transferred in for resale from other locations.
  4. Assists bookstore shipping/receiving personnel in transfer of merchandise from one campus site to another.
  5. Monitors stock and restocks shelves with books and supplies when needed.
  6. Assists in general maintenance of store which may include vacuuming, dusting and re-arranging stock as needed to ensure merchandise is properly presented.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Exposure to video display terminals may occur on an intermittent basis. Exposure to noise extremes and ventilation problems may occur at some sites. Extended work hours are necessary at the start of each term.

Physical Requirements

Position involves extended standing on a frequent basis and moderate to heavy lifting is occasionally required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Six months of experience in a retail environment involving operation of computerized cash register equipment and high volume public contact.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the public. Must have the ability to work on an independent basis.
