Nature and Scope of Work

The Lighting Technician plans and executes maintenance of interior and exterior lighting for all college facilities district-wide in cooperation with the college Electrician. Other key accountabilities include developing a college-wide lighting standard and maintaining and adjusting that standard as necessary, planning and executing lighting upgrades with energy efficient systems and materials, observing the work of outside contractors in new construction, reviewing plans for new work and providing critical input concerning lighting types and systems. The Lighting Technician is also responsible for operation, maintenance and repair of clocks located at all college facilities. They are expected to work in a safe manner and to maintain a safe work environment. The incumbent independently plans, and executes their own work on a daily basis, and coordinates necessary electrical repairs beyond their capability. Incumbent will also respond to other minor electrical repairs as directed. The Lighting Technician reports to the Manager, Maintenance and Grounds and is provided general work direction by the college Electrician.

Principal Accountabilities (performs some or all of the following)

  1. Plans the interior and exterior lighting maintenance program for the college district. Programs complex lighting control systems.
  2. Performs interior and exterior lighting maintenance in all district facilities. Tasks include replacing defective lamps, ballasts and lenses in each room in the district at least twice a year on a six-month rotational basis as fixtures are maintained and making repairs to faulty switches and outlets. Thorough cleaning of fixtures and lenses is performed.
  3. Appropriately disposes of old lighting materials in accordance with environmental standards.
  4. Plans monthly, weekly and daily work activities. Reports the location of work activities to the Plant Services Request Center daily, and coordinates work with the campus at which projects are being completed on a daily basis.
  5. Plans, purchases and maintains necessary inventory of parts and materials needed for execution of work at each campus and location.
  6. Coordinates other electrical repairs noted during routine activities.
  7. Plans and executes general lighting upgrades to energy efficient lighting standards in areas where older systems exist; advises architectural team of lighting requirements for new construction.
  8. Instructs users in proper operation of complicated lighting systems as they get integrated into computer style hardware and software.
  9. Orders, dismantles and repairs clocks throughout the college.
  10. Develops and maintains records of work completed.
  11. Records necessary work in the Plant Electrical Permit record book, and schedules and assists with inspections.
  12. Assists with the development of annual budgets for lighting maintenance.
  13. Reviews work of outside contractors and reviews plans for interior and exterior lighting in new facilities.
  14. Responds to requests for other electrical maintenance when directed (work to be within limits of license).
  15. Contributes expertise to the maintenance team by participating in regular staff meetings.
  16. Responds to college emergencies and closures as directed to be certain that essential systems remain operational to protect the equipment and college facilities, particularly during adverse weather. Helps other Plant Services staff in cleaning snow and ice and in preparing campus for reopening after emergencies and closures.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Incumbent works with electrical energy and all of the hazards, which are associated with the control of that energy. Work will be performed in interior and exterior locations of the college including all classroom, office and support spaces. Some areas will be impacted by noise (e.g., boiler rooms and mechanical spaces). Other work areas will be either hot or cold depending on interior or exterior location and adverse weather conditions. Work hours are flexible in order to meet the needs to do the work in the least disruptive manner possible. Much of the work will be performed off ladders and lifts (at heights up to 75 feet) involving a lot of overhead reaching (removing and installing lamps, ballasts, lenses) and numerous trips up and down the ladders or lifts with parts. Must be aware of everything that is going on around the work area in order to maintain a safe environment for staff and students. Work will require daily travel in college vehicles to various work sites.

Physical Requirements

Work requires long hours of standing on ladders working with arms above one’s head. Incumbent must be able to go up and down ladders on a frequent basis; and be able to frequently move ladders and operate lifts. Must be able to lift 40 pounds maximum. Some learned physical skill is required. Certain coordinated finger, limb, or body movements must be performed in the course of regular work routines.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent. Two years of documented experience in lighting maintenance in a commercial or institutional setting. Must have a Limited Maintenance Electricians License as issued by the State of Oregon. Must possess a valid Oregon Drivers License for operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Oregon. Must be able to communicate effectively with college staff, students and visitors.
