Nature and Scope of Work

Under the general direction of grounds maintenance management, maintains and repairs a wide variety of grounds vehicles and equipment. Maintains maintenance logs and adequate parts inventory to ensure seasonal equipment availability. Work situations may require consideration and interpretation of circumstances or information to choose the most effective responses. Job requires well developed verbal and writing skills to present and exchange technical information and specifications with grounds maintenance management, staff, co-workers, sub-contractors, and outside vendors. Work results impact the safety, accuracy, reliability and acceptability of further results beyond the immediate work section. Responsible for producing journey-level work output on an independent basis subject to supervisory direction and review. This position is designated as “essential personnel” as defined in the Classified Agreement.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Maintains and repairs grounds equipment such as mowers, tractors, carts, chain saws, leaf blowers, sprayers, and weed eaters, as needed. Maintains, repairs and diagnoses problems with shop equipment and tools.
  2. Performs preventive maintenance on grounds vehicles and equipment by inspecting, adjusting and repairing or replacing parts and components that meet manufacturers requirements and state and federal laws. Performs safety checks and maintains records on each vehicle and major piece of equipment.
  3. Designs and/or makes alterations, modifications, and/or adaptations, and prepares to place into service vehicles and equipment, including electrical, hydraulic and/or mechanical systems to meet user needs, such as for snow vehicles and other special apparatus; fabricates parts as needed.
  4. Operates forklift to move equipment and heavy parts in shop and/or yard; operates all types of vehicles and equipment in order to troubleshoot problems, test repairs, and for transporting.
  5. Operates special and/or heavy equipment, including snowplows and CDL required dump truck operations. May be required to operate backhoe and/or payloader.
  6. Maintains computerized records, including maintenance logs and billing/invoices.
  7. Recommends and assists in prioritization of upgrades and replacement of machinery, tools, and equipment. Assists in budget preparation related to this work.
  8. Performs specialized tasks during adverse weather conditions and college closures.
  9. Responds to work orders and requests for assistance using various means of communication, including computerized maintenance management system.
  10. Maintains a safe work environment and performs all duties in a safe manner. Observes and adheres to all safety rules required by the college and regulatory agencies. Reports all safety violations to management.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work is performed indoors in a maintenance shop environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions, and involves use of lubricants, fuels, cleansers, solvents, and maintenance-related substances.

Position involves potential exposure to ventilation issues, noise extremes and inclement weather. Work pressures and disturbances of workflow and irregularities in work schedule are expected.

Physical Requirements

Position requires considerable and usually sustained physical effort. Strength and agility for heavy lifting and knowledge of correct body dynamics is necessary. Requires ability to operate physically demanding equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Four years of experience troubleshooting and performing maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of tools, materials, processes and techniques of mechanical repair and related fabrication, and of preventive maintenance; mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems of vehicles, equipment, tools, and accessories. Ability to maintain inventory; research equipment, parts, and supplies needed and place orders.

Computer skills required to maintain logs, inventories, process purchases and invoices, respond to e-mails, search the internet for parts/equipment, and respond to service requests using the computerized maintenance management system.

Well developed oral and written communication skills to present and exchange technical information. Must be able to use a respirator when required.

Must possess the following valid licenses and certificates:

A valid driver’s license for operation of a motor vehicle in the State of Oregon and possess an acceptable driving record. A Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, for operation of commercial motor vehicles in the State of Oregon within twelve months of employment. Certificates of First Aid and CPR, and forklift driver within six months of employment.
