Library Supervisor
Class: Management | Exempt status: Exempt | Grade: F
Under the direction of management, the Library Supervisor ensures and is accountable for the effective delivery of library services and operations at an assigned campus library. Works collaboratively with other Library Supervisors to maintain library operations across the College. Uses independent judgment to provide leadership on the assigned campus in the areas of staff supervision, customer service, library systems training and use, facility and inventory security, as well as logistical support for library facilities projects. Supervises classified, casual, and/or student employees. Participates in the development and administration of operational policies, procedures and processes. Plans, organizes, and coordinates workflow to maintain consistent levels of service. Keeps accurate records for the purpose of planning and accountability.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises campus library activities by scheduling, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the workflow to ensure consistent levels of service at assigned campus library and across the College.
- In alignment with federal, state, and College policy, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and coordinates day-to-day job assignments for classified, casual, and/or student employees. Disciplines and recommends dismissal of staff as necessary.
- Ensures efficient library operations and compliance with established policies and procedures, and that employees are well informed and trained in/on policies, services, operations, programs, and events.
- Records and monitors expenses to ensure conformance to budget constraints. Submits budget recommendations for consideration.
- Collects and monitors statistics needed for management of campus and College operations. Prepares, reviews, maintains, and assists with a variety of related reports, records, and documents.
- Collaborates with library leadership to develop and implement goals, policies, and procedures. Coordinates activities and programs with other library departments and locations.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with employees and staff College-wide. Collaborates with internal and external customers and stakeholders, such as students, faculty, staff, and the public to fulfill the library mission.
- Responsible for facility and inventory security at the assigned campus library. Collaboratively coordinates and develops relationships with safety personnel, Facilities Management Services, Information Technology, and other College areas, to ensure safety and security for students, employees, community members, and PCC property.
- Contributes to a variety of meetings, committees, consortia, and other related groups. Performs outreach to the College community and informs students, staff, and faculty about library services, programs, and collections. Represents the Library at College and consortia meetings as required.
- Serves as front-line person for communicating, interpreting, and enforcing library policies. Responds to customer needs online and in person. Works with individuals to resolve problems. Assists in difficult service interactions, and with students with financial account issues related to library charges.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and stays current in regard to library related technology, practices, and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is generally performed in an academic library environment, with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Work schedule will be regular but may vary in order to support library operations and maintain appropriate staffing levels. Evening or weekend hours may be required. Travel between campuses may be required. Frequent reaching, walking, standing, lifting, stooping, or carrying of equipment or library materials may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library Science or related from an American Library Association accredited institution or international equivalent, or six (6) years of library experience; one (1) year lead or supervisory experience.
Knowledge of:
- Library systems such as automation and resource sharing;
- Institutional repositories;
- Interlibrary loan technologies;
- Inventory principles;
- Conflict management principles;
- Basic budgeting principles;
- Safety procedures;
- Computer technology software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Skills in:
- Supervising subordinate staff;
- Interpreting and applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations, such as FERPA and copyright;
- Monitoring and maintaining a library collection;
- Monitoring the performance of vendors and contractors;
- Resolving conflict;
- Preparing a variety of financial reports related to departmental operational activities;
- Developing, recommending, implementing, and monitoring policies, procedures, and workflow;
- Working with diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff;
- Utilizing computer technology used for communication, point of sales, data gathering and generating reports;
- Communicating effectively through oral and written mediums.
