Student Basic Needs Survey 2023
Overview
The Hope Center‘s Student Basic Needs Survey addresses student basic needs (such as food insecurity, housing insecurity, homelessness, mental health, and childcare), their utilization of public and college support services, and any barriers students may encounter when accessing basic needs services.
In Spring 2023, invitations to complete the survey were emailed to 30,338 Portland Community College students of which 3,171 (10%) responded to some or all of the survey questions.
Spring 2023 survey findings
64% of PCC survey respondents experienced at least one one of the following: food insecurity, housing insecurity or homelessness. More specifically,
- 43% of respondents experienced limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire such food in a socially acceptable manner in the prior 30 days.
- 56% of respondents experienced one or more challenges that prevented them from having a safe, affordable, and consistent place to live in the previous year.
- 18% of respondents did not have a fixed, regular, and adequate place to live at some point during the previous year.
See PCC Student Basic Needs Survey Results , a Hope Center publication, for a comprehensive report of the findings.
