Equations
Math and science notation must be properly structured to be accessible to screen reader users. MathML (Math Markup Language) is a way to make the structure clear, and it often works along with MathJax, which is a set of open tools that allow MathML to display well in websites via browsers. There is still some variability though depending on the browser and screenreader combination that is in use.
The good news is that math written with the D2L equation editor is generally accessible, and the same is true for math created through PreTeXt or some LaTeX workflows. Tools like Wiris’ MathType can also produce structured math but there are some differences depending on if you are authoring in a mac, windows, or google environment.
Some things to consider when creating math/science content:
- Images of equations should be converted to MathML or MathType as well.
- When making video, remember to read out all the equations and notation instead of saying “this equation here.”
- If you have handwritten answer keys, they will also need to be converted to an accessible format for screen reader users to have access.
