AVS Instructor Qualifications Prior to February 2022

FAA Certificates:

  • COMM or ATP Pilot Certificate
  • CFI
  • AGI
  • IGI

At least 2 years aviation industry management experience.

Part 61 Initial CFI Minimums (24 months as CFI + 40 hours ground training or 100 hours ground training in an FAA 141-approved course).

Associate of Applied Science degree in aviation field of study -or- Bachelor’s degree or higher in non-aviation field of study.

Minimum Qualifications by Course Offering

For all classes:

  • Willing to commit to full term.
  • Fewer years of experience may be considered for part time instructors if their experience coordinates with the subjects to be taught.

AVS-107 Flight Lab: Level I
AVS-207 Flight Lab: Level II

  • One year experience teaching in the Aviation Science program.

AVS-120 Airplane: Private Pilot Ground
AVS-130 Instrument Ground

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate; Airplane Single-Engine Land and Instrument Instructor Ratings (CFII SEL) and 200 hours dual instruction given; OR
  • Current FAA Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate with classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.
  • Current TSA Flight Instructor security training.

AVS-140 Airplane: Comm Pilot Ground

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate with Single- and Multi-engine Airplane and Instrument Instructor Ratings (CFII SEL MEL) and 200 hours dual instruction given; OR
  • Current FAA Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate with classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.
  • Current TSA Flight Instructor security training.

AVS-230 Airplane: Flight Instructor Grd

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate with Single- and Multi-engine Airplane and Instrument Instructor Ratings (CFII SEL MEL) held for at least 24 calendar months, and 400 hours dual instruction given; OR
  • Current FAA Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate with classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.
  • Current TSA Flight Instructor security training.

AVS-110 Helicopter: Private Ground
AVS-150 Helicopter: Commercial Ground

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate; Helicopter and Instrument Instructor Ratings (CFII RH) and 200 hours dual instruction given; OR
  • Current FAA Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate with classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-260 Helicopter: CFI Ground

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate with Helicopter and Instrument Instructor Ratings (CFII RH) held for at least 24 calendar months, and 400 hours dual instruction given; OR
  • Current FAA Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate with classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-127 Intro to Aviation

  • Five years as a commercial pilot;
  • Experience teaching pilot judgment and decision-making
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-137 Applied Aerodynamics

  • Current FAA Certified Flight Instructor Certificate, Helicopter or Airplane Rating;
  • 400 hours dual instruction given;
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-157 Aircraft Systems & Structures: Airframe
AVS-167 Aircraft Systems & Structures: Powerplant

  • FAA A&P Certificate, or two years as an active commercial pilot;
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate, Airplane or Helicopter rating;
  • Two years field experience as pilot, mechanic or flight instructor.
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-227 Aviation Careers

  • Experience teaching 100-level Aviation Science classes; OR
  • Ten years of industry experience working as a commercial pilot.
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-237 Aviation Law and Regulations

  • Experience teaching 100-level Aviation Science classes; OR
  • Experience in an FAA-designated management position (such as chief instructor, chief pilot, or chief of maintenance).
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.

AVS-267 Economics of Flight Operations

  • Experience teaching 100-level Aviation Science classes;
  • Aviation management background.
  • Classroom teaching experience in these areas with student evaluations / references.
Preferred Qualifications

For all classes:

  • Experience with online course management system
  • AAS in PCC’s Aviation Science Program
  • Classroom teaching experience with student evaluations
  • Active CFI currently engaged in Part 141 flight instruction
  • Listed as flight instructor for Hillsboro Aviation.

AVS-157 Aircraft Systems & Structures: Airframe
AVS-167 Aircraft Systems & Structures: Powerplant

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to above):

  • FAA IA Certificate
  • Flight Instructor Certificate.

AVS Requirements prior to Nov 2009

Part-time Instructor

Minimum requirements are:

  • Federal Aviation Administration Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Certificate with aircraft category rating appropriate to the course being taught (eg: CFI: Airplane for Airplane Private Ground or CFI: Helicopter for Helicopter private Ground).

OR

  • Federal Aviation Administration Certified Advanced Ground Instructor Certificate

AVS Instructor

Must comply with FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) requirements for instruction under Part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. These requirements include Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor Certificate with ratings appropriate to the courses being taught (usually Instrument Instructor and Multi-Engine Instructor ratings for airplanes).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Recommendation by a Chief Instructor for whom the applicant has instructed and demonstrated instructional skills in a 141 proficiency check for the syllabus being used
  • At least 50 hours of duel flight instruction given

For helicopters, completion of a Robinson Factory Safety Course

Plus at least one of the following, with preference given to those with more:

  • Experience as a Chief of Assistant Chief Instructor
  • AT least 5 students graduated with at least and 80% pass-first-time rate
  • A minimum of 200 hours of dual-given
  • Previous classroom teaching experience (PCC experience preferred)
  • Graduate from PCC’s AVS program (Honor students preferred)
  • Outstanding performance on the pre-assignment evaluation below
  • For helicopters, an instrument rating (all airplane instructors have this rating)
  • Participation in the FAA “Wings” safety program
Pre-Assignment Evaluations
  • A pre-assignment evaluation will be accomplished in the form of an interview and sample ground and flight lesson. These will stress the fundamentals of instruction and the impact of attitudes and instruction on safety. The Department Chair will conduct the ground portion of the interview and either the Department Chair of the Chief Instructor, as appropriate, will conduct the flight portion.

Recommendations in FAA document: p. 713. Ensure that the following regulatory initiative’s for AMT’s are taken:

  • As there is no certification requirement beyond a current Airman’s Certificate (A&P) to teach in Part 147 schools, instructional standards and quality are often questioned. Establish qualification, certification, and recurrent training requirements for instructors who teach in FAR Part 147 approved AMT schools.
