MUS Instructor Requirements Prior to May 2016

Master’s degree or higher in Music (MM, MS, MA, PhD, or DMA)

Music theory and sight singing/ear training courses (MUS 111, 111C, 112, 112C, 113, 113C, 211A, 211B, 212, 212B, 213, 213B), in addition to one of the degrees listed above, require a minimum of six graduate quarter credits in music theory.

Music performance courses and all MUP courses (applied music lessons), MUS131, 153A-C, 158A-F, 195A-F, 220A- F, 221A-F require one of the degrees listed above or the equivalent professional experience (six or more years of regular performing, conducting, recording and /or teaching).

Master of Music degree or higher (Doctor of Musical Arts or PhD in Music)

For specific courses:

MUS 101, 110, 190, 191, 192, 193, 191p, 192p, 193p require one of the above degrees, OR Master of Arts or Science in Music including 15 quarter hour graduate credits in music theory.

MUS105, 106, 108, 201, 202, 203, 205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210 and 214 require one of the above degrees, OR Master of Arts or Science in Music including 15 quarter hour graduate credits in music history and literature.

MUS170 requires Master of Music or higher, OR Master of Arts or Science in Music including 15 quarter hour graduate credits in music technology.

MUS131, 153A, 153B, 153C, 158, 195, 220, 221, and all MUP courses require one of the degrees listed above, OR Bachelor of Music degree plus a total of five years of experience including professional concertizing, recording and/or collegiate-level teaching.

MUS Instructor Requirements

Candidates must meet one of three criteria:

  1. Master’s of Music degree
  2. Master’s degree in a related area plus 30 quarter hours graduate credit in subject area
  3. Bachelor’s degree in music plus demonstrated competency in field of music:

For applied music (MUP) candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of private teaching experience and at least five (5) years of professional experience (concertizing and/or conducting). In areas of music technology and ethnomusicology, candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience. This may include publications, multimedia authoring and recording studio work. In addition, candidates must have teaching experience in the specific field.

Music (Professional Music) Instructor Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in recording technology or related field plus three years in music to include: studio and music production, acoustic design, and technical maintenance of analog and digital recording equipment.

OR

  • Assoc degree in recording technology or related field plus five years of professional experience in music to include: studio and music production, acoustic design, technical maintenance of analog and digital recording equipment.

OR

  • Seven years of professional experience in music to include: studio and music production, acoustic design, and technical maintenance of analog and digital recording equipment.
