How to use Alt-PressWatch, Ethnic NewsWatch, and GenderWatch

Search for articles from alternative, independent, ethnic, and minority
presses or on gender issues, and narrow your search results.

How to Find These Databases

  1. Begin at www.pcc.edu/library
  2. Under Shortcuts find the link to Databases
  3. On the Articles and Databases page, choose the “All Databases” tab
  4. Scroll down the alphabetical list to find Alt-PressWatch, Ethnic NewsWatch, or GenderWatch.

What Can I Find in these Databases?

Alt-PressWatch Provides full-text articles for publications from the alternative and independent presses.
Ethnic NewsWatch Provides full-text journal, magazine, and newspaper articles from ethnic, minority, and native presses.
GenderWatch Provides full-text articles focused on the impact of gender in many
subject areas, including the women’s movement, men’s studies, the transgender community, and changes in gender roles.

Searching the Database

You can search any of these three databases using the same method. Begin by typing one or several (not more than 4) keywords that describe your topic into the search box, e.g. black lives matter, as seen in the screenshot above. Then click on the magnifying glass at the right of the search box, or press Enter on your keyboard.

Search Tips

  • Use truncation (*) to get multiple versions of the word, e.g. teen* = teen, teens, teenagers.
  • Put quotes around phrases to indicate you want the words searched in that order, e.g. “graphic novels”.
  • Don’t see the full-text link for the article you want? Click Get this item to see if we have the full-text somewhere else. If we don’t have it, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan.

Narrowing Search Results

At the left of your search results is a column of different ways to narrow results—in other words, to shorten the list of results by specific criteria.

  • You can limit results to include only articles available in Full Text.
  • Or limit by a certain Source Type, such as newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, and other sources.
  • The Subject options will narrow your results to fit a subtopic of your general topic.
