Apply: Phlebotomy Technician

IHP’s phlebotomy program is an entry-level intensive course that includes training in the skills, knowledge, and abilities critical for a career as a phlebotomist in a health clinic or medical center.

Admission to the program is based on a first-come, first-served basis and requires immunization records. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Summer 2024 phlebotomy applications will be accepted from February 2 to June 21, 2024.

Course Content

  • Blood collecting, handling, transporting, and processing specimens
  • Anatomy, physiology of pertinent body systems, and pathologic conditions
  • Lab equipment use and care
  • Safety precautions and quality control
  • HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)

Time

Two terms, 90 hours of classroom and lab work, plus 100-hour clinical in a hospital or clinic.

Tuition

$2,999, excluding book. Tuition is due at the time of registration, or students may set up a 6-month payment plan with the Portland Community College Business Office. For information about the payment plan, please visit the PCC Payment Plan webpage.

Things to keep in mind before applying

  • Make sure you have included all requested materials before submitting your application. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
  • You must be age 18 when class begins.
  • Submitting a registration form does not signify or guarantee that you will be registered or accepted into the Sterile Processing program.
  • This program includes or requires educational experiences that take place in clinical/field environments. The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Public Health Division requires students in clinical/field environments to comply with vaccination requirements, including COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Students must pass a background check and drug test in order to participate in the clinical practicum. Students will be required to order their background check and drug screen once classroom training begins. If you have any questions, please contact EntryHealthcareapps@pcc.edu.
  • Once students complete the 2 terms successfully (entry into Term II is dependent upon successful completion of Term I) Institute for Health Professionals will provide the student with the necessary documents to apply for the National Certification Exam through the ASCP.

Application Checklist

We require the following documentation to be submitted for consideration into the program*.

Submit the following to EntryHealthcareapps@pcc.edu:

  1. Copy of high school completion or GED certificate. A college or university degree can substitute.
  2. The PCC Non-Credit registration form. You must include a working email address since you will be notified of acceptance by email.

Submit the following via the CastleBranch website:

  1. A copy of your AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card.
  2. Required Vaccines
    • Hepatitis B titer/immunity exam shows positive or reactive results. Or a confirmation from your medical provider stating you have immunity to protect you against Hep. B.
    • MMR titer/immunity exam result shows immunity (positive)
    • Varicella titer/immunity exam shows immunity (positive)
    • Covid-19 vaccine – two doses
    • Tuberculosis testing (PPD) for the current year shows negative results. If the result is positive, a clear chest X-ray is required
    • Tetanus within the last 10 years
    • Flu vaccine for the current season (August 2025 to April 2025)

  3. Under “CLIMB for Health Professional”, select “PH56im: Immunization Records

Final Steps

Students will be contacted by email with class schedule and registration information when a complete application is submitted including immunization records, passing the background and drug screen.
