Awareness-based mindfulness: clinical applications for anxiety and depression

Positive psychology literature is filled with clinical evidence of how mindfulness can effectively manage moods and enhance life success and experience. In the Awareness-Based Mindfulness course you will learn:

  • How mindfulness and neuroscience combine to unlock hidden strengths and the power of intentionality
  • Solution-oriented interventions that will help clients rewire their brains, more effectively regulate emotions, and manage daily stress
  • Practical and creative methods for quickly shifting clients’ anxiety and depression in positive directions
  • How to use breath to regulate the brain and body

Instructor: Gina Purl is an Advanced Certified Rolfer® with a certificate in Interpersonal Neurobiology and trainings in multiple somatic modalities, including yoga. Bridging the Rolfing® structural integration model of the embodied Line with the IPNB triangle of integration, Gina Purl blends her interdisciplinary roots to facilitate understanding of mindfulness in working with clients.

Clinical evaluation: ASAM criteria and DSM

Learn clinical evaluation based on ASAM criteria 3rd edition and DSM-5 to attain the latest requirements. Includes applications to adult special populations and a review of DSM-5, substance use disorders. After the clinical evaluation: ASAM criteria and DSM course you will:

  • Be able to describe the 6 assessment dimensions of the ASAM criteria
  • Be able to articulate or describe the parameters for each of the 5 broad levels of service
  • Be able to understand and determine level of care placement

Note: All NEW Oregon CADC 1 applications after July 1, 2016, must include clinical evaluation ASAM education hours.

Enteric nervous system: gut-brain axis for mental health & wellbeing

Research demonstrates how your enteric nervous system, known as the “gut-brain axis,” is essential for overall health. Healthy digestion is closely interrelated with mental and physical wellbeing. In the gut-brain axis course you will learn to:

  • Define and differentiate the enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, and the somatic nervous system
  • Understand the role of the enteric nervous system as it relates to body and brain health
  • Recognize internal cues between body and brain
  • Apply techniques to regulate the autonomic nervous system
  • Learn somatic and cognitive exercises
  • Demonstrate how to integrate nutrition into the conversation about mental health

Instructors: Holly A. Shumway, NCC and LPC, and Melissa Lovett, MA and Certified Holistic Nutritionist, are co-facilitating this innovative course. Both operate private practices. Holly Shumway’s additional specialties include International Trauma Professional (2015), Nationally Certified Counselor National Board of Certified Counselors (2011), and Eating Disorder Certificate (2011). In addition to a Certificate in Nutritional Therapy program, Melissa completed a Master Choa Kok Sui Pranic Healing Course. Melissa works in all areas of disease, including GI disorders, lifestyle changes, mood and hormonal balance, stress-related illnesses, and inflammatory diseases to help clients move towards homeostasis within their own bio-individualist needs.

Format: 1 day, 6-hour classroom course

CEU eligibility: Approved by the Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, Oregon Board of Massage Therapists, and Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners for 6 professional CEUs. This course qualifies for Level II CEUs for the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP).

Foundations of Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Instructor: Charles Smith, MSW, CSWA, is the Principal at Charles Smith and Associates LLC, providing clinical services and therapeutic martial arts with adults, youth, and families, and is the owner of Portland Soo Bahk Do martial arts center. Mr. Smith serves as the program coordinator for the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation of Oregon and a therapist at Black Men and Women in Training. He also teaches at Tennessee State University. Mr. Smith has 17 years of family preservation treatment experience, 35 years of training experience, and 20 years of supervision and management experience. He became a Certified Motivational Interviewing Trainer in 1993, and is also a Certified Trainer in Social Services Competency Based Training (1996). Mr. Smith enjoys spending time with family, playing golf, and exploring nature.

Intermediate Motivational Interviewing (MI)

You already have a basic understanding of Motivational Interviewing, but there are additional skills you’ll need to implement MI effectively with your clients and patients. In the Intermediate Motivational Interviewing course you will learn about:

  • Further applications of Motivational Interviewing as an approach to facilitate change
  • Using the 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing in your practice
  • Preparatory change talk
  • Gauging readiness to change
  • Transitioning to planning
  • Supporting change as a daily, long-term practice
  • Cultural considerations, and how to adapt MI strategies accordingly

IPNB of perinatal mood disorders and birth trauma

Learn Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), including for families affected by perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and birth trauma. Explore the impact and practices of attachment and bonding, including the development and interventions of affected families.

After the IPNB of perinatal mood disorders and birth trauma course, you will be able to:

  1. Define Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) and apply IPNB concepts to perinatal social work.
  2. Recognize and identify a spectrum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and the effect of birth trauma on the brain and nervous system of the month.
  3. Describe the effect perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and birth trauma have on the attachment bonding process.
  4. Summarize how the child’s brain and nervous system are impacted by a caregiver who is experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders or birth trauma.
  5. Apply IPNB concepts to interventions used with caregivers experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders or birth trauma.

Instructor: Fawn McCool, LCSW received her Master of Social Work at California State University and a certification in Interpersonal Neurobiology through Portland State University. As an LCSW, Fawn has worked in a variety of settings providing skilled trauma-informed services to families, women, and children. Additionally, she has had the honor of presenting at several professional conferences focused on Behavioral Health Counseling in Primary Care and School-Based Health Centers.

Format: 6 live-streamed, online classroom sessions with live video engagement with instructor and students. Sessions are recorded for viewing later if you cannot attend live.

CEU eligibility: 15 hours of professional CEUs (approved by DONA for 13.3 CEU hours)

Trauma-informed care: a continuum of care

Leaders in the field are beginning to teach about a “continuum” of implementation, where organizations move through stages. This course prepares professionals and organizations at all levels to adopt trauma-aware approaches and practices. In the trauma-informed care course, you will:

  • Learn the science and principles of trauma, resilience, and self-care
  • Understand the impact of traumatic events (mental, emotional, physical) overtime
  • Incorporate knowledge about trauma and resilience into your work
  • Develop and practice skills/tools to enhance current work with your clients

Instructors: Marsha Morgan, MPA, former Chief Operating Officer of Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health. Marsha recently retired from Truman Medical Center (TMC); Dr. Tara J Gunther, PSYD, Clinical Psychologist at Allegheny Health; and Dena Sneed, Community Occupational Therapist at Truman Medical Centers
