Art at Cascade

Art on campus

The Cascade Campus Art Department faculty works collaboratively to improve teaching and student learning in both art and art history courses through a focus on contemporary and historical concepts, impeccable attention to craftsmanship, and the inclusion of a personal perspective or vision.

Facilities

The Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building is the hub of art activity at Cascade Campus. The Paragon Building and the Margaret Carter Technology Education Building are also centers for arts classes, exhibitions, and activities.

Art History

Students meet for Art History classes in Cascade Hall or the Margaret Carter Technology Education Building in classrooms with digital projection on large screens. Unlike traditional large lecture halls, rooms are arranged to promote dynamic classroom discussion. Art History classes take advantage of art in the Campus Art Collection and the Paragon Arts Gallery to experience art directly.

Through the PCC Library, Art History students easily access digital art images for study and review using the JSTOR Images Digital Library of over 2 million images related to art, architecture, and other academic disciplines. In addition to JSTOR Images, the PCC Library subscribes to a wealth of database resources for researching art, including JSTOR Journals, Oxford Art Online, and Gale Fine Arts. The Library also collects books, journals, and DVDs in the area of Fine Art.

Basic Design

Basic Design classes share the Paragon Printmaking Studio in the Paragon Building. The studio features large flat tables and lots of natural light with easy access to the Paragon Arts Gallery.

Ceramics

The Cascade Ceramics Studio features a range of ceramics equipment to support to a well-rounded assortment of curricular offerings. Facilities include a sizable north-facing main studio with natural light, large tables for hand building, pottery wheels, a slab roller, a clay extruder, a glaze laboratory, an indoor kiln room, and an outdoor kiln courtyard.

Ceramics equipment: pottery wheels, slab roller, clay extruder, glazing equipment, raku kiln, electric oxidation kilns, gas reduction kilns.

Drawing

The Drawing Studio in the Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building is a north facing room with natural light, and easels and drawing boards for 20 students.

New Media Arts

Video Art, Introduction to Animation, and Digital Tools classes are taught in the state-of-the-art Mac Lab in the Margaret Carter Technology Education Building.

Painting

The Painting Studio in the Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building is a north facing room with natural light, and easels and individual mobile palette tables for 20 students.

Photography

Photography classes are held in Mac computer labs in the Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building where students can work on editing and printing digital photographs. Photo students share the computer labs with students studying in the Multimedia Department.

Photography equipment: Large Epson Photo Printer 7900, Mac desktop computers, Adobe suite, Premium photo luster paper, etc.

Printmaking

The Printmaking Studio shares the Paragon Building with the Paragon Arts Gallery. Students work in screen printing, relief, and intaglio in a spacious studio skylit with natural light. Basic Design and Watercolor classes are also taught in the studio that features large flat tables with space to spread out.

Printmaking equipment: Exposure unit with fan, two relief/intaglio presses, washout booth, registration paper punch, paper cutters and tear bars, silk screen and relief inks and station, emulsion station, universal laser cutter, rosin box, laser jet printer, Adobe photoshop, in studio student Macs, book press, silk screen table clamps

Sculpture

The Sculpture Studio boasts north facing windows and a garage door that opens to a courtyard. Large flat tables accommodate 20 students for modeling and assembling in plaster, clay, wood, and mixed media.

Sculpture equipment: Panel saw, Jig saw, drills, sander, bench vise, hand held power tools, hand saws, mold making equipment, plaster and buckets, and other tools

Paragon Arts Gallery

Housed with PCC Cascade’s Printmaking Studio in the Paragon Building, the Paragon Arts Gallery is an educational and community space (over 1000 square feet) that supports two rooms for art exhibition, video, performance, and other new media art. The Paragon shows juried professional artwork of high artistic quality and cultural relevance, and annually hosts a student exhibition. Situated with other Humboldt neighborhood businesses on North Killingsworth Street, the Paragon welcomes students and community members into the space.
