Details about this class
Our class is unique from many public speaking courses because it is online and with scheduled live speech delivery. You will deliver your three speeches live using the Zoom conferencing tool with fellow students as the audience.
You will be required to deliver and attend three peer speeches - live over zoom. You will schedule a day/time to deliver your speech live, and attend one live peer speeches during each these weeks:
- Week 4: April 20-24
- Week 6: May 4-8
- Week 11: June 8-12
Technology
This class is technology intensive; with regular zoom meeting hosting for live speech delivery and audience attendance, use of Google Drive to save and share speech videos in D2L discussion forums, and will use other D2L technology tools for weekly video discussions.
You will be recording video assignments weekly, and presenting three formal speeches live using zoom and with a live audience (some with the requirement for digital visual aids). This means you will be required to use your webcam and microphone to capture both your verbal and nonverbal delivery on all speaking assignments.
To complete these essential course assignments, you must have the following by the first day of the term:
- Webcam (available for purchase from the PCC bookstore so you can use Financial Aid funds; and the PCC Library has technology Equipment for Checkout)
- Microphone or headset with microphone (also available for purchase from the PCC bookstore; and the PCC Library has technology Equipment for Checkout)
- Access to a computer- some video features will NOT work on a mobile device (i.e. smartphone or tablet). PCC has personal study cubes fully equipped with computer, webcam and microphone, you can reserve one: Reserve an Online Study Cube
PCC General Technology Requirements for Online Courses include:
- Microsoft Office or equivalent (Google Docs, iWork, etc.). You must be able to save files as doc, docx, rtf, or pdf format.
- Get Office 365 here for free using your PCC student email account.
- Firefox, Chrome, or Safari browser
- You must be able to work with documents and upload to Assignments in D2L. Directions to use Google Drive in Brightspace.
- The technical requirements for most online classes include access to a computer with a modern operating system and a supported web browser.
- Zoom meeting hosting and participation.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
