Details about this class
I'm honored that you're checking out Philosophy courses and hope you'll decide to take the next step and register! For more about me and how I approach teaching and learning with you, please visit my PCC web page. You can also check my FAQ document which includes general information about my courses and policies; I update it each term, so some of it will be specific to the current term but many details will stay the same.
Important to note: you do have free access to our assigned textbook through the PCC Library. You do need the textbook for the course, and copies are fairly inexpensive, but you do have the option to use online access through the library. There is a limit on the number of users that can access the book at any one time.
- I use labor-based grading in my courses, which means that the grade you earn is up to you and the amount of work you decide to complete (there's a section on this in the sample syllabus below). While there are requirements and standards for your work, if you meet them then your work receives credit. There are due date requirements, but partial credit is available for assignments submitted past the due date.
- For more on labor-based grading (sometimes also called contract grading), check out this article.
In terms of what to expect, here's a link to our Course Calendar from Spring '24; it gives you a sense of the content we cover. In terms of how grading works, I've updated policies since last teaching PHL 191, so here is the Winter '25 version of a PHL 202 syllabus that includes my most current grading practices. Please reach out with any further questions!
