Welcome to SOC 215!

To learn more about our class and view an introductory video, please visit my Google Site.

Our class will examine contemporary and historic social movements.  We will explore why social movements emerge, why they may succeed or fail, and their role in driving social change.  The course will offer some of the skills needed to organize movements for social change.
 
Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Frame social movements within their historical and social contexts. 
  • Describe how social movements relate to social structures and cultures through the application of the sociological imagination.
  • Employ appropriate social research methods and data analysis to analyze social movements.
  • Explain how social inequality and systems of power, such as class, race, gender, sexuality, age, etc., relate to social movements.
  • Analyze various social movement strategies and their outcomes.

You will have one required course books for our class.  

  1. Loeb, Paul Rogat.  2014 (2Ed). The Impossible Will Take a Little While. New York, NY: Basic Books.

    You can purchase the book through the PCC Sylvania Online Bookstore or at your favorite independent bookstore.

Additional free articles and videos will be included in the course syllabus and modules.

Technology

This course is a remote and online course, meaning that we will have a weekly Zoom class on Mondays and the rest of our course materials and activities will be online and asynchronous.  You will be able to access all course materials via our D2L course page on your own schedule each week.  The Week 1 modules will open at 6:00 am on the first day of class.

We will not be using any special technology beyond our PCC Desire2Learn (D2L) tools and standard word processing programs for assignments.  Students will need to:

  • Be comfortable with our D2L Course page requirements to participate in discussions, submit assignments, and complete quizzes and exams.
  • Use word processing tools for homework assignments and the term paper, in a Word or PDF format, that can be uploaded to our Assignments folder.
  • Have access to a computer and internet for course activities, including viewing videos.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.

Online prerequisite: Start Guide for Online Learning

Before you take your first online class at PCC, you must complete the start guide for online learning. The start guide will help you decide if online classes are right for you. Once you complete the start guide, you will be eligible to register for online classes.

The Start Guide is not required for remote classes but strongly recommended.
