Details about this class
Everyday Chemistry CH100 is a course that is completely online/remote (you never need to come to campus). The lectures are interactive presentations. Class will meet online in Zoom meeting once a week on Thursday to go over Chemistry concepts and answer any questions on the homework or labs. You will typically need to set aside 1.5 hours a week to watch the lecture content. There is no textbook required for the lecture portion of the course. Lecture content and homework assignments will be posted on D2L class homepage.
The lab experiments are performed using a lab kit that you MUST purchase and have delivered to your home by Week 4 of the term. The lab kit costs ~$120 and can be purchased directly from Carolina (lab kit supplier) or a voucher with a code can be purchased with financial aid from the PCC Bookstore and then the code entered into the Carolina website. Note: costs will be higher when purchasing through the PCC Bookstore. To minimize your expenses, purchasing the lab kit directly from Carolina is preferred. The PCC Bookstore cannot physically stock the kits on-campus. It is required that you take selfie photos of yourself doing each experiment to verify you are completing it independently.
The weekly hourly demands for this online/remote course are as follows:
- 2 hours online Zoom meeting to cover new chemistry concepts and answer any questions. Students can also view the video lectures and complete the accompanying homework problems
- 1-2 hours to complete the weekly discussion post
- 3 hours to complete the weekly lab
You must receive a passing grade (70%) in the lab portion of the course in order to pass the entire course.
Technology
Students will need to have reliable Internet connection for this Online/Remote class. The class assignments will be submitted as .doc, .docx, google doc, or pdf files. Students will be using MS Excel or Google Sheets for graphing assignments during labs. The Google Doc and Google Sheets are free for all PCC students using PCC student email.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
