Details about this class

Greetings! I am Scott Cooper, Paramedic/Firefighter/Educator. I began to teach at PCC in 1994. Teaching medical terminology has been one of the highlights of my teaching career. I hope you will join me on your path to becoming a healthcare professional!

Please consider that this is a 4-credit class and will require regular log-in and studying. The standard practice for college courses is to plan 3-4 hours of homework for each credit. Therefore, you should plan for this class to have 12-16 hours of coursework per week.

This is a 100% ONLINE COURSE. There are no scheduled remote or in-person class meetings. Students follow the course schedule to complete their coursework each week. There is a weekly discussion called Learning The Lingo (LTL) that is in two parts, the first due Thursday nights, the second on Sunday nights. LTL includes recording oneself pronouncing medical terms so students receive feedback on proper use of medical terms, spelling, pronunciation, and also the application of correct grammar to maintain context and professional credibility. There are also weekly quizzes and graded exercises.

THE FIRST WEEK

A required self-introduction is assigned as the course check-in. It is due by 3:00 PM on Friday of the FIRST WEEK. Students that do not complete this by the deadline are subject to being dropped from the course.

MP111 REQUIRED TEXTBOOK

We are currently using the FIFTH edition of the textbook, as listed by the PCC Bookstore for the MP111 course. It is an excellent text. The publisher does not offer a digital version for it. There is a newly published 6th edition that we have not transitioned to yet.

ONLINE BROWSER

Students must be attentive to using a proper web browser in order to successfully use D2L Brightspace! The primary supported browsers are Chrome & Firefox.

Technology

 None.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.

Online prerequisite: Start Guide for Online Learning

Before you take your first online class at PCC, you must complete the start guide for online learning. The start guide will help you decide if online classes are right for you. Once you complete the start guide, you will be eligible to register for online classes.

The Start Guide is not required for remote classes but strongly recommended.
