Supply List
Introduction to Appliqué

Besides your sewing machine, cutting mat, scissors, thread, and other necessary sewing needs…

We are making four placemats. Each mat will have one week’s appliqué lesson on it. Here are the supplies you will need:

Fabric:
Placemats:
  • If making your placemats using the same fabrics top and backing:
    1 yard
    Cut into 8 — 12.5″x 15.5″ rectangles
  • If using different fabrics for top and backing:
    1/2 yard each
    Each cut into 4 — 12.5″x 15.5″ rectangles
Appliqué:
  • Large heart: scraps or Fat Quarter for four large hearts
  • Small heart: scraps or Fat Quarter for four small hearts
  • If using the same fabric for all hearts: 1/4 yard
  • If you choose to use different fabrics for each style of appliqué, 8″ scraps or Fat Quarters will work
  • Heart templates–2-hearts <–click on link for templates
Do not yet cut hearts from your fabric
Batting: 1 yard or Craft Size. I suggest a rather flat batting like Warm and Natural, Quilter’s Dream, or more the more spendy Hobb’s Tuscany batting (not the less expensive Hobb’s nor Pellon’s batting
Sewing Supplies:

Besides the sewing machine, scissors, thread–the basics

  • Piece of relatively stiff plastic or lightweight cardboard–Used for tracing the hearts. I use plastic from the folders that have a plastic band that slips on the folded plastic to hold the papers in the folder. Lightweight cardboard will also do the trick
  • Washable glue stick–Elmer’s brand is good or a Glue Pen made especially for fabric and quilting.
  • Appliqué pins–my favorite is Clover Appliqué Pins. They are sharp and perfect. Appliqué pins are shorter than regular pins (.60 x 20mm)
  • Appliqué sewing needle–(size #10 or #11)
  • Freezer paper
  • Steam-a-Seam 2 Fusible Web–please DO NOT USE Heat N Bond. It is too heavy. Steam-a-Seam 2 is perfect. There are other brands of fusible web. Make sure it is useful for sewing with appliqué
  • Might be useful but not manditory: Stabilizing web–I suggest Sulky Easy Tear Stabilizer
  • Might want to try Fusible Thread…it is pricey and other methods are just as simple but is kinda cool 🙂 I bought Superior Threads Fusible Thread off Amazon for about $10. I know Montavilla Sewing Centers sell Superior Thread brand.
  • Heart Templates2-hearts <–click on this link to download your templates
Do not yet cut out hearts from your fabric

These are the basics–other things may be needed as we move on. Please have them ready before class begins.
