Course Description
Explore simple block printing. Learn about acquiring the right tools and materials to begin carving at home along with learning to design the right image, transfer it to the block, carve and stamp it. Students can fashion their own greeting cards, printed linens, patterned clothes and much more.
Materials
Provided Materials:
- Rubber blocks for carving
- (2-3) 2″ easy carve blocks
- (2) 4″ x 6″ easy carve blocks
- Some printable items
- 1 shopping bag
- 10 2″ blank white stickers
- 5 blank greeting cards
- a limited amount of scrap paper
Shared equipment for use in class (these are not to go home):
- Stamp Pads
- Carving tools
- Brayers and Block printing ink
Additional equipment to be provided by students (recommended to bring each week):
- Sketch pad and pencil
- Additional Carving blocks if needed
- Additional items to print on
- Scrap paper (bring weekly)
- clothing items (new or used)
- linens (new or used)
- paper products (greeting cards, poster paper, business cards, etc)
Safety
- Students will be required to follow all established safety guidelines
- Use Safe Cutting Techniques: Always cut away from the body and keep fingers away from the path of the blade.
- Keep all workspace tidy and organized. Ensure that tools are placed in a safe and accessible manner, and that the working area is clear of unnecessary items.

Week 2
- Carving Techniques and Practice
- A Simple start to at home printing
- Bring to class:
- a fabric item to print on
Week 3
- Designs: What Works and What Doesn’t
- Transferring an Image to the block
- 10 Blank 2” stickers and 2″ square or round blocks provided
- Bring to class
- Sketches/ideas for a print on a 2” sticker (2” round)
- additional material to print on (fabric or paper)
Week 4
- Words
- Shading and Texture
- 4″ x 6″ or 2″ x 2″ block will be provided
- Bring to Class
- Sketches/ideas for a print containing shading or texture (4” x 6”, 2” x 2” )
- material to print on (fabric or paper)
Week 5
- Using Ink and a Brayer
- Ink and 3 brayers will be provided
- Bring to Class
- Bring 4 x 6 block from previous class
- materials to print on (blank greeting cards recommended)
Week 6
- Repeating and Continuous Patterns
- Blank beige tote bag and blocks will be provided
- 2″ block will be provided
- Bring to class
- Sketches/ideas for 2” repeating patterns
- material to print on (fabric or paper)
Week 7
- Repeating and Continuous Patterns: Continued
- Bring to Class
- Sketches/ideas for continuing patterns using 2” blocks
- material to print on (fabric or paper)
Week 8
- Multi-Color Printing: Layering Colors, Reduction Prints and/or Sectioned Color Prints
- 4″ x 6″ block will be provided and used for the remainder of the class
- Bring to Class
- Sketches/Ideas for 2-4 color images (4” x 6” greeting card)
- material to print on (fabric or paper)
- If you want to try a larger size, bring an appropriately sized block
Week 9
- Multi-Color Printing: Continued
- blocks from last week to continue work on them

Week 10
- Multi-Color Printing: Continued
