How to Identify Steel
Use a magnet to identify steel. If it sticks, it’s steel!
Note that this doesn’t tell you what type of steel you have, but it does help make sure you’re not mistaking a non-magnetic metal for steel.
Galvanized steel and Stainless steel can be shiny, sometimes blueish, and will not rust. They can not be welded in the school shop.
Cast iron will show signs of being a molded product, it will have seam lines and be kind of porous and textured. It can not be welded in the school shop.
