WELCOME, Olivia Alcaire olivia.alcaire@pcc.edu

I work for Portland Community College as a part-time College Success and Career Guidance Faculty (CG 225 & CG 101) and in Corrections Education. I love working with students who are developing college goals and future career pathways, which takes time and conversations with academic and career advisers, faculty, and some support from academic services offered through the Student Learning Center can benefit students greatly. I have worked with diverse students who come from different backgrounds socially, economically, and culturally. Students range in age, life experience, job/work responsibilities, connections with family and friends, and college life. PCC has become a great supporter of all students, and you’ll find lots of resources on the PCC website – emergency funds, food pantry, resource centers, career services, academic advising and lots more. My work with students has included academic advising, teaching, career exploration, precollege preparation (secondary students), and transfer planning. PCC is a great place to explore your college options, what program you want to study, different degree and certificate options, and prepare for your chosen career pathway.

Originally from California, I came to Oregon to go to college, and I chose Portland Community College because I wasn’t ready for a 4YR College experience. Fast forward, here I am a college faculty and coordinating a lab in corrections education. A lot of great faculty, academic advisers, and staff guided me along the way and would not let me give up. I worked while I attended college, and made compromises to balance school/work/family/friends to meet my goals. Below are the degrees I earned in college, with one more in progress.

  • BA/MA Mexican History and EdD Education Leadership (in progress) at Portland State University
  • EdM Adult Education and Training, Oregon State University

My Work

  • Computer Lab & Adult Tutoring Coordinator, Corrections Education – South Fork Forest Camp, Tillamook Forest This job is part of a partnership with the Higher Education Coordinating Commission, the Department of Corrections, and Oregon Community Colleges as part of the Workforce Investment Opportunity Program where Adults in Custody (AIC’s) can complete their GED and become prepared with job-ready soft and hard skills employers are seeking. The remote location in the Tillamook Forest allows AIC’s to get experience on fire crews, and working with ODF on our roadsides, state park trails, campsites, etc. Sometimes I see deer walk through the camp, while I enjoy the mountain views surrounding the camp location.
  • Part-time Faculty, College Success & Career Guidance My work with transfer students at PSU and PCC has involved exploring college options, preparing scholarship application essays, creating an education plan and career pathway. I teach CG 225 Transfer to a 4YR College (winter and spring terms) where students prepare for their transfer, compare 4YR college options, and understand more about themselves as learners and meeting their goals. In CG 101 Personal Responsibility, students learn how to adjust to college life, learn about college resources like MyPCC and Panther Tracks, and connect with others in their classes.

COURSES TAUGHT

  • CG 225 Transferring to a 4 Year College (winter/spring)
  • CG 101 Personal Responsibility (fall)
