2016 Feature Event: Eriel Deranger – Decolonizing Environmental Justice – Monday, April 18thEriel Deranger speaking into microphone

The District Sustainability Office and Sylvania Multicultural Center are hosting Eriel Deranger for a workshop and public lecture exploring the intersectionality of privilege, oppression, race and environmental justice.

Eriel Tchekwie Deranger is a Denè Indigenous rights advocate, activist and member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) of Northern Alberta, Canada. She works alongside various Indigenous and environmental organizations at provincial, national and international levels. Her work focuses on creating greater awareness about the negative impacts on climate, human life, and Indigenous rights surrounding the issue of the Alberta Tar Sands. Eriel is currently employed as the Tar Sands Campaign and Communication Coordinator for ACFN. In the past she has worked with Rainforest Action Network (RAN), TakingItGlobal, the United Nations Indigenous Youth Caucus, and various youth projects.

  • Workshop with Eriel Deranger, 8:30 – 12:30 (breakfast at 8am), Tree Rooms. Eriel Deranger will guide participants through a hands-on workshop that explores how power, privilege and oppression play pivotal roles in perpetuating environmental racism and the critical steps necessary to be an environmental justice advocate and ally. During the workshop participants will learn the concepts, skills and knowledge necessary to understand how to introduce anti-oppression frameworks into environmental & social justice work. By dissecting how power and privilege exist within a broad spectrum of society, including within social justice movements, participants will walk away empowered to become better allies.   • Kelly Point Park Clean Up,9am – sundown, Kelly Point Park. Join the Cascade Environmental Club for the Kelly Point Park Clean Up! This will be an all-day event of invasive species removal, planting of native species, trash pick-up, and a metal detector beach walk.   • Habitat Restoration Work Party, 9am – 12 noon, Meet in Building 7 first floor student lounge, Come celebrate Earth Week with a habitat restoration work party in the PCC Rock Creek Environmental Studies Center. We’ll be removing invasive plants and trash from the forest. Please dress to work outside; we will provide tools and gloves.
  • Plant Sale and Portlandia Farm Standia,12 noon – 4pm, outside Building 5 (rain location inside Building 5). Veggie and flower starts to get your garden going and the kick-off of theSpring 2016 Portlandia Farm Standia season!
  • Food Recovery Club Tabling,12 noon – 4pm, outside Building 5 (rain location inside Building 5).Food Recovery Club at Rock Creek is dedicated to volunteerism,sustainability, and fighting hunger. Our ASPCC club is only the second chapter in Oregonout of 167 nation-wide. In 2015 our volunteers have recovered ~1000 pounds ofperishable, unsold, unconsumed food from our dining hall and donated it to CommunityAction Family Shelter in Hillsboro.   • The Ecology of Whiteness: A Workshop on Race, Land, and Decolonization,2 – 4pm, Learning Garden.This workshop, facilitated by Ben Cushing, will invite participants to examine the relationship betweenthe construction of whiteness and the ecological crises we currently face.  It will suggestthat “whiteness” was constructed in opposition to multiple constructions of “wild” and“savage” Others.  In short, the construction of colonized peoples and lands as wild andsavage, and the corresponding construction of white authority as rational, progressive andcivilizing, function to legitimize and naturalize colonial power.

  • Learning Garden Work Party,10am – 2pm, Learning Garden. Come join Learning Garden staff, student volunteers, and communitymembers to clean up the garden for spring and get prepped for the growing season!Earthen oven will be fired up. Karen Cox, whose thesis, Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus Organic Learning Garden: Opportunities for Transformative Learning,Healing, and Hope for the Future, and who helped start the garden in 2006 will be on hand.
  • Get Buzzzy & Become Bee Friendly!  10am – 2pm, Learning Garden.  Meet some real pollinators in the garden and learn how to safely attract themto your own green space. Jan Curry, Environmental Educator and Anne Lesenne, RockCreek Beekeeper will provide free pollinator friendly seeds, plant starts, advice, andeducational materials for you. There will be an opportunity to safely observe our beehives.
  • Meet the Learning Garden Artists! 12 noon – 2pm, Learning Garden. The Rock Creek Learning Garden has interesting sculptures and arton permanent display. A number of the artists will be on hand to talk about their pieces.

  • Waste Audit & Campus Clean-Up, 9:00am-12:00pm, Quad. Join the Green Team as we pick-up litter around the campus and sort through trash to find out what our campus is sending to landfill!
  • Trash for Peace Workshop, 12:30-2:30pm, Quad. Trash for Peace works to educate about the importance of reducing, reusing, and rethinking waste using functional art. Stop by to learn more about what they do, as well as participate in a hands-on, innovative upcycling craft that you can replicate at home or in your community.

  • Iron Chef Veggie Cookoff, 11:00 – 1:00pm, Great Hall. PCC students put their veggie cooking skills to the test to make delicious, healthy, sustainable food. The winning recipe will be featured in the cafeteria.
  • Earth Day Tabling Fair, 11:00 – 3:00pm, Quad. Come learn more about local environmental organizations such as Friends of Trees and Weed Warriors, Southeast sustainability initiatives like the Bike Club and Learning Garden and shop the native plant sale.
Friday, April 22
  • Learning Garden Launch Party, 10:00am-12:00pm, Learning Garden. Come celebrate as we break ground for our new learning garden northwest of the Administration Building. We will have fun activities and refreshments!
Sylvania
All Week
  • What are you eating? Dining services in conjunction with ASPCC will be providing additional and wonderful vegetarian and vegan options all week. ASPCC will help learning the benefits of these delicious choices.
  • How to be Sustainable. Check out the Sylvania library displays on what we can do to be more sustainable. Take a look at different titles, all with the theme of “how to be sustainable”.
  • Styrofoam Recycling Challenge. During Earth Week this year, our PCC community will compete in the Styrofoam Recycling Challenge: Students vs Faculty and Staff. This is your chance to clear out any Styrofoam resisted throwing out. We will be holding the styrofoam at PAC courtyard.
  • Art Club Displays, 10am – 2pm, CC Mall
    • Infographics (see the presidential candidates and their environmental positions);
    • Communal paintings;
    • Green thumb collaborative (green thumbs as leaves on a tree);
    • Many hands pointillism project (pre-orchestrated composition executed by general population);
    • Upcycling art workshops prior to earth week and a display of completed works during;
    • Paper making workshop; and
    • Repurposed cardboard sculpture contest
  • Disposable Water Bottle Display, 10am – 2pm, CC Mall. Compare the waste between disposable water bottles vs. a reusable one in the CC display case.
  • Mother Earth Fair, 10am – 2pm, CC Mall. Learn more about this great event!
  • Flat Magnet Collection, 10am – 2pm, CC Mall. Help biology students learn about biologic processes when they upcycle those old magnets into interactive learning tools.
  • Recycled Supplies Drive for Artalacartenw, 10am – 2pm, CC Mall. We are looking to collect:  Shoe boxes, soup cans, paper towel rolls, happy meal sized toys, ornaments, package bows, gift bags, wood scraps, corks, broken jewelry pieces, board games, baby food jars with lids, clothes pins, cds/dvds, floppy disks, wrapping paper, tissue boxes!  Please have items clean and dry before contributing. Donators will be entered into a drawing for free passes to Art a la Carte in Vancouver!

  • Meatless Monday, All day, Cafeteria. Learn about how reducing the amount of meat you eat can be tasty and beneficial to the planet. This is a collaboration between ASPCC and Food Services.
Tuesday, April 19

  • UpCycling Event, 11am – 3pm, CC upper mall. Come learn about our on-going eCycling efforts during Spring Term and see a demonstration of our hard drive smashing machine.  Bring your old computer to us for eCycling and smash your hard drive!  For more information, contact Diane Shingledecker.
  • Ecofeminism Event, 11am – 3pm, Lower CC Mall. Ecofeminism is a movement combining feminism and the green movement, based on the idea that the oppression of women, the environment, and animals is because of our patriarchal society. The WRC is collecting ecofeminism inspired art submissions through Friday, April 15 to hang in the CC the day of the event. Attendees will vote on the pieces submitted and winners will get a bookstore gift card. There will also be an area for students to write their answers to questions related to ecofeminism on paper leaves and decorate them to hang on a tree- woman cutout. The event will be completely made up of old/reused materials and no new- that includes all paper.There will also be an area with information about the movement, what students can do to help, etc.
  • ASPCC 2nd Annual Iron Chef Veggie Cook Off! 11am – 1pm, Dining Hall. Three contestants, two rounds, one winner. PCC students put their veggiecooking skills to the test to make simple, healthy, sustainable delicious food. The winningrecipe will be featured in the Bistro later that week.
  • Habitat for Humanity, 12pm, Upper CC Mall. Learn how to make the dream of homeownership a reality for deserving families in the Portland/Metro East area. Volunteer opportunities take place on and off the construction site, and are available for individuals. Habitat for Humanity provides a unique opportunity for hardworking families to build and buy their own homes. Their houses are sold at no profit to our homeowner families, with a 0% down payment for closing costs and a 0%-interest mortgage (0% APR).
  • Connecting Higher Education to Agenda 2030, 3 – 5pm, TCB 211. Dr. Kim Smith, PCC Sociology Instructor and Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network (GPSEN) Coordinator, will introduce the UN’s Agenda 2030 and the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals. Co-sponsored by GPSEN and Portland Community College, this event builds on efforts to create a network across our region to support educational solutions to our sustainability challenges.
Wednesday, April 20
  • Habitat Restoration Team Work Party, 9am – noon, Sylvania Natural Park. Join the Habitat Restoration Team and Portland Parks & Recreation at Sylvania Natural Park for a work party making brush piles for the pollinator meadow and to decrease creek access, as well as ivy removal!
    We will have water, tools, gloves, and a few snacks. Dress for the weather and to get a little muddy. Let’s help the Earth by letting some of our native species in this park get more of an advantage!  We will meet at Parking Lot 10 (the most northeast parking lot kitty corner to the bookstore) at 9 am and then walk down to Sylvania Natural Area Park (SNAP!)
  • Commute Options, 10am – noon, CC Mall. How You Get Here Matters to PCC and to our planet. Stop by the transportation and parking table to see what your transportation options to and from campus are. Learn tips about earth friendly transportation, meet others who bike/walk/take transit, and win prizes.
  • Seed Swap 10am – 2pm, CC Mall. Do you have too many unwanted seeds but not enough of what you want?  The Learning Garden is in the same position. Join us for our annual seed swap.  Bring your unwanted or unneeded seeds and trade them for ours.  Or, if you have found yourself without growing space this year you can donate seeds with the assurance that they will benefit our learning community.

We are asking everyone to bring in yourgently used items to donate and in return you are welcome to take what you need from ourcommunity collection. This is a great opportunity to do a little spring cleaning and findsomething new. We are asking people to donate your gently used: Men, women, childrenand infant clothing. Accessories: bag, backpacks, jewelry. Books: Novels,cookbooks,scholarly, study guides. School supplies: Binders, notebooks, calculators rulers, etc.Household items: Small hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers garden spades, etc. (NO powertools). *We will be taking donations the week before the event on Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15between 11am – 3pm lower CC.
  • Bicycle Commute Clinic, Noon-1pm, CC Mall. Come learn about some of the basics of getting around by bicycle including rules of the road, safety tips, all weather gear, route-planning, combining biking and transit, and basic bike maintenance. A representative from the Bicycle Transportation Alliance will provide the presentation and be on-hand to answer any questions regarding how to get around by bicycle.

ASPCC provides the materials, including the worms, you learn how to create a vermiculture composting system to help with composting in your apartment or home. Super easy and fun! Space is limited so you will need to register with Andrea Salyer.
  • Earth Day Birthday Party, noon – 1pm, ST 100. Join the Habitat Restoration Team for birthday cake and a documentary screening to celebrate Earth Day’s birthday!

  • Can You Dig It? 1pm – 3pm, Learning Garden. Come join us in Sylvania’s very own learning garden! See what is growing, view our worm bin, learn about plants and planting. We will provide all the tools necessary. No previous skills required! Bring some friends and help the garden beds get ready for spring gardening.
