GHG Inventory Update FY 2016

2016 Greenhouse Gas inventory chart by year

Portland Community College completes an annual greenhouse gas inventory to monitor its progress toward meeting its greenhouse gas reduction targets, as outlined in the Climate Action Plan:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 2006 levels by 2030; and
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% below 2006 levels by 2050.

Between 2006 and 2016, PCC reduced overall greenhouse gas emissions by 6%.

Scope I and II emissions, which account for energy consumption, have reduced by 30%. These are referred to as “direct emissions.” These savings can be attributed to energy efficiency upgrades and new efficient LEED certified buildings. In fact, these efforts have helped the College reduce total energy consumption per square foot by 45%! This is particularly impressive since the College continues to grow and has increased its square footage by 25%.

Scope III emissions, also referred to as “indirect emissions,” have increased by 7% since 2006. Since scope III emissions include commute, waste and college purchases, it is expected that these emissions will increase as enrollment does, and enrollment has increased by nearly 25% since 2006! Targeted behavior change efforts including inter-campus shuttles, the mini max waste reduction program and sustainable purchasing have helped keep scope III emissions relatively stable despite the large increase in enrollment.

The College is working on a wide variety of initiatives to reduce its greenhouse gas footprint. Many of these efforts are outlined in the Climate Action Plan and Sustainability Leadership Council annual work plans.
