✨ Student Spotlight: Alexandra’s Journey of Resilience, Empowerment, and Impact ✨
Posted by katie.weibel
Meet Alexandra, a Family and Human Services student at Portland Community College whose incredible story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the transformative power of education. As a disabled, single mom who has overcome homelessness, Alexandra is now not only excelling academically—earning straight A’s and making the President’s and Dean’s Lists—but also using her love for photography to empower and support others in ways that will leave a lasting impact. 📸💪
One of Alexandra’s key goals is to use photography to support families in the Child Protective Services (CPS) system. “This is what I’m fighting for,” she says. “No parent mentors take photos for families during those crucial, limited moments they have together. I want to be the first to offer that.” Her dream is to use her lens to capture moments of connection and joy for families facing difficult times, helping to create lasting memories despite adversity. 💖
The Portland Community College Career Pathways & STEP has been a lifeline for Alexandra, offering academic support and accountability. “Having someone to hold me accountable made all the difference,” she shared. This support, combined with her own resilience and determination, has fueled her journey—and it’s clear she’s only just getting started.
One of Alexandra’s boldest steps was participating in PCC’s study abroad program in Prague. This experience was especially significant for her as a disabled, single mom, but it’s also a testament to her strength and commitment to growth. “I went to Prague not just for the photography, but to experience something new and grow as a person,” she says.
Her Study Abroad Advisor, Alison Garfinkle, noted:
“Alexandra was resilient, passionate, and thoughtful throughout the process. Understanding that she might need additional support during her experience, she proactively reached out to discuss options. She planned daily meditation and yoga to stay centered and used FaceTime to connect with her kids to combat homesickness.”
Her Study Abroad Instructor, Kim Manchester, echoed this admiration:
“It was empowering to watch her flex her skills that started at PCC. She took everything she learned and applied it in a new environment, demonstrating incredible self-awareness and the ability to advocate for others.”
Alexandra’s growth during her study abroad experience in Prague was not only about photography—it was about developing autonomy, creative problem-solving, and cultural awareness. “I want to better relate to clients who are dropped into new environments and understand their stories from a deeper perspective,” she says. Her ability to empathize, advocate, and create space for others to be seen and heard is truly remarkable. 🌎✨
As she continues to pursue her dream of combining Family and Human Services with photography, Alexandra is already making a significant impact. We are so proud of her achievements and the bright future she’s building.
