Meet Katie Potts: A Passionate Advocate for Student Success

Katie Potts, a dedicated coach with PCC Career Pathways & STEP, brings a deep passion for supporting students on their educational journeys. Her career in student advocacy began with the Gateway to College and Future Connect programs, where she discovered a calling to help disadvantaged students.
Katie’s first role in the field was at Portland State University, where she supported foster youth and quickly fell in love with the work. This commitment deepened during her time with New Avenues for Youth, where she gained valuable experience empowering young people to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
“The most important thing to me is the college piece,” Katie shared. “So many of the people I serve have been told, ‘You can’t.’ I’ve been there too, and I know how transformative it is to have just one person believe in you. That’s what I strive to be for our students.”
Since working with Katie, I’ve seen her connect with students in such an authentic, beautiful way. One day at an in-person event, Katie spotted one of her students, whom she had only met online. It was a first for both of them, and they embraced and cried—such a beautiful and powerful moment. Even during my interview with Katie, she teared up a few times, demonstrating the deep care and dedication she brings to her work.
Katie’s advice for students considering Career Pathways & STEP is simple but powerful: center yourself and ask for help.“We coaches are here to show up for you,” she said. “Everything we do is student-led, and no concern is too big or too small. This program was designed with you in mind—without you, it wouldn’t exist.”
When she’s not advocating for students, Katie enjoys all things October and spooky, adding a touch of festive fun to her work. Her enthusiasm and unwavering support make her an invaluable resource for students looking to reshape their futures.
