Celebrating Women’s History Month: Queeny’s Journey of Growth and Empowerment at PCC
Posted by katie.weibel
In honor of Women’s History Month, we celebrate the inspiring journey of Queeny, a remarkable woman whose story is one of resilience, growth, and the power of community support. Her journey through Portland Community College’s Opportunity Centers, ESOL program, and Career Pathways & STEP has not only transformed her confidence and language skills but has also ignited her passion to give back to the community.
When Queeny first arrived in Portland, she faced a challenge that many immigrants and non-native English speakers experience—the fear of the unknown. “I wanted to improve my English, but I was scared that it might be a scam,” she recalls. However, her husband encouraged her to explore the resources at PCC, and she found herself in the PCC Opportunity Center, which provided her with free access to education and community connection. This was the first step in a journey that would help her gain not just language skills, but a sense of belonging.
Queeny began her learning experience in the ESOL program, where she faced the daunting task of mastering a new language. “At first, I could only understand about half of what you were saying when I joined your class,” she shared with me in a recent email. “Now, I can communicate with others normally and feel more confident in conversation, whether in daily life or at work.” She credits her improvement in English to the guidance and support she received from the teachers, staff, and classmates at PCC. “I appreciate you for guiding me in the right direction,” she wrote to me, reflecting on our time together in the Explore Career & College for Immigrants, Refugees, & Non-native English Speakers class back in April 2023.
Queeny’s journey didn’t stop there. Once she had a solid foundation in English, she turned to PCC Career Pathways & STEP, where she found even more guidance to pursue her professional dreams. Back in China, she had worked as an accountant, but she knew that in order to succeed in the U.S., she needed to continue her education. “I want to learn accounting here in America,” she explains. “I enjoy the class, and I’m planning to earn a certificate in accounting. My long-term goal is to get an accounting degree and work in the field.”
Her path also led her to a job at a local restaurant, where her newfound communication skills made all the difference. What began as a host position quickly grew into a promotion to server. “I earn tips now!” Queeny smiles. “Being a server requires strong communication skills, and thanks to my English improvement, I can handle it with confidence.”
Queeny’s story exemplifies the power of women supporting women, and how a community like PCC’s can empower individuals to achieve their goals. The journey through PCC’s Opportunity Centers, ESOL, and Career Pathways & STEP programs has not only shaped Queeny’s career but also improved her family’s life. “My son loves daycare, and I’m proud of the positive changes in our lives,” she says. “He’s learning so fast, and his teacher says he’s doing great in Spanish class!”
As a woman who has overcome countless challenges, Queeny shares her wisdom with others: “Learning English is tough at first, but don’t be afraid to start. Take small steps every day and ask for help when you need it. There are so many people here who will help you along the way. The most important thing is to believe in yourself. If I can do it, so can you. We are stronger than we think.”
Queeny’s inspiring story also includes her participation in the “Equity Through Literacy” conference with the Portland Literacy Council, where she shared her experiences and connected with others who are on similar journeys. “It was empowering to be around other students and teachers who encourage one another,” she says. “We all lift each other up.”
From the Opportunity Centers that helped her take the first step to the Career Pathways & STEP program that gave her the tools to build a meaningful career, Queeny’s journey through PCC is a testament to the transformative power of education. Her perseverance and belief in herself, backed by the PCC community, highlight the essence of what Women’s History Month is all about—celebrating the strength, resilience, and growth of women who inspire those around them.
Queeny’s story isn’t just one of personal success; it’s a reminder that the support of community, education, and the belief in one’s potential can change lives. And just like the many women throughout history who have paved the way for others, Queeny’s journey shows that when we empower women, we empower entire communities.
