COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING EVENTS & UPDATES

Fall eCycle Drive at Sylvania

Bring your old computer stuff and have it responsibly recycled by Total Reclaim. Two self-service plastic bins are located in the Sylvania Library under the main stairs on the first floor.

November 13, 2014 Hard Drive Smashing Event

11 am – 1 pm in the Sylvania Campus CC Building Mall, we will be “smashing hard drives”. Technically, our students will be disassembling your computer and using machines created by PCC engineering students to bore a large hole through your disk drive. Come out to support this event, mark the date on your calendar, and join the facebook event to help spread the word!

MLK Day of Service – PCC students needed for Project Leaders

In order to manage the hundreds of student volunteers that will be serving on MLK Day, we need your help! Project Leaders will be assigned a project and volunteers to manage. You’ll ensure that volunteers have direction, materials, support, and motivation to get work done. You’ll also help facilitate reflection activities with your volunteers following service. To prepare you for this experience, you’ll be provided with training and support.

NEW POSTINGS

Below are 6 NEW POSTINGS from these organizations: Aloha High School, Gentiva Hospice, Volunteers of America Oregon, American Diabetes Association, Friends of Tryon Creek, and TLC Farm.

1. Aloha High School: Volunteer Opportunities

We all agree on the importance of education, which is why it’s so very difficult to see students struggle and give up when they can’t get the support they need. We need your help giving more students the one on one support they need to succeed in school. Whether or not you need hours, experience, or just a rewarding volunteer job, this is your chance to share your skills, make a difference, and have some fun. High school students are really fun to work with and they need your help becoming the strong future of tomorrow.

Opportunities for service with us:
At Aloha there are almost as many volunteer opportunities as there are students. Help students one on one in: math, science, language arts, world language, social studies, health (or request a special area of study that interests you most). Chaperone: field trips, college visits, dances, and other special events. College and career: provide job shadow opportunities, mock interviews, support senior presentation process, help students with scholarship and college application.

How to start:
Complete this simple application/background check.

Once completed contact Serafina Warner by phone or email at:

5. Friends of Tryon Creek: Join the warriors of the forest!

Stewardship Saturdays in Tryon Creek State Natural Area (9am to 12:00pm)

The Friends of Tryon Creek’s mission is to connect people to this important natural area, share our passion for the wonders of nature and inspire environmental stewardship in all.

Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest. Ivy out competes our native plants, covers tree canopy stopping photosynthesis, takes over the forest floor and ruins precious habitat. We choose to remove this ivy manually without chemicals in order to minimize damage to the ecosystem, so help from the greater community is very much appreciated. Come hang out with fellow nature enthusiasts and give back to your community!

  • Registration is not required but please call ahead with groups of 5 or more
  • Come to 11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd. 97219
  • Parking space is limited so carpooling is recommended if possible
  • All minors must be checked in at the Nature Center with their minor’s insurance form signed by a parent/guardian (can be found on our website at www.tryonfriends.org)
  • Anyone under 14 MUST be accompanied by a parent/guardian
  • Gloves and a light snack provided
  • Please bring your own water bottle
  • Please dress for the weather, to get dirty, and to be off trail (sturdy shoes and long pants are strongly suggested)
  • We usually need to hike at least 15-20 minutes to get to the spot where we will be working
