1. Impact NW: Volunteers needed for dynamic after-school teaching experience!

Bridger SUN School is seeking volunteers to teach fun, themed learning classes with links to reading, writing, math, science…etc. Bridger is a K-8 school located in East Portland with a Spanish immersion program. It is a highly diverse, energetic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment. After school time runs from 3:15-5:15pm Monday-Thursday, from January 26th to March 12th (7 weeks). The first hour, from 3:30-4:15 is homework help time, and the second hour is an enrichment class. Each of our classes is offered twice a week, either M/W or T/TH. Ideally, teachers can come beginning at 3:15. If you are only able to volunteer for either the enrichment class or the homework time, that is welcome as well! Teachers are able to request the age range – generally 1st-3rd or 4th-6th graders.

Possible classes include: Sports, Science, Reading, Dance, Theater, . . .whatever you want! If you have an idea for a class and would like support creating the curriculum, we can help.

START DATE: January 26th | END DATE: March 12th (7 weeks)

TIME: Either Mon/Wed or Tues/Thur (or both!) from 3:15 to 5:15 *if you are only available for the homework help time from 3:15-4:15, that would be excellent as well!*

LOCATION: Bridger SUN School, 7910 SE Market Street, Portland

Position Requirements

  • Must be able to supervise 12-18 children ages 6-12 in a positive, caring manner.
  • Must be able to communicate to colleagues, parents, children and supervisors.
  • Must be able to complete and pass an Oregon Background check prior to start date.
  • Educational experience a huge plus.
  • Desire and ability to work with children and ensure an enriching, positive, safe setting.

2. Sexual Assault Resource Center: Become an Advocate for Sexual Assault Survivors

SARC is seeking highly dedicated volunteers interested in providing emotional support, resources, and information about medical and legal options for survivors of sexual assault and commercial sexual exploitation in Washington and Multnomah Counties. Advocates provide this service in two ways: (1) telephone response and (2) in-person response at safe locations such as hospitals, police departments, youth shelters, and other sites where law enforcement is present.

Requirements for this position include:

  • 20 years or older, and identifying as female
  • Commitment to a one-year volunteer term
  • Completion of SARC’s 50 hour Advocacy Training (next training held in February, 2015)
  • Sign up for a minimum of four, six hour shifts (24 hours total) each month
  • Attend monthly volunteer meetings
  • When on call, be available to support individuals over the phone, and respond in person to designated safe locations in Washington and Multnomah Counties
  • Work professionally with case-related SARC staff and community partners
  • Maintain confidentiality about clients, volunteers, staff, and the agency

3. Cherry Park Elementary SUN: Activity Leaders, Assistants, and Mentors!

Cherry Park Elementary will be introducing its SUN Community Schools extended day program on January,12 2015. We would like to welcome volunteer Activity Leaders, assistants , and mentors to help us create an enriching experience for students attending.

A few of the classes we would like to have include, hip-hop dance club, science, fun fitness, theater, music, poetry, gardening, cooking, Zumba, homework club, and more.

We are looking for energetic, positive role models to help get children motivated and active. All volunteers would need background checks and reference checks through our parent organization, Metropolitan Family Services.

4. Columbia Slough Watershed Council: Exercise your creativity as our Videographer Volunteer!

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is seeking a volunteer videographer for our annual awards videos. These awards honor local watershed heroes! In the time-honored Slough tradition, each award will be recognized with a humorous video describing the award winner’s efforts. For a look at what has been done in the past, check out our videos from last year. We’ll provide the acting talent and the Videographer Volunteer will be responsible for filming and assisting with direction on the set to achieve the best footage possible. There may be an opportunity to assist with editing and creating the final product depending on the volunteer’s skill set and interest.

Project 1: Video filming
December – January. With option to begin filming additional 20th Anniversary video in early November. Approximately 40 hours, filming days semi-flexible.

Project 2: Video editing
January – early February. Option to edit 20th Anniversary video with interest and ability. Both projects completed by February 4th, 2015. Approximately 20-40 hours, schedule flexible.

Project 3: Other video production
Month to month. We have a number of small video production projects that we’d like an individual or group to take on. Contact us for more details!
