Portland Homeless Family Solutions: Summer Service-Learning Internship for Students

Posted by

PHFS Community Connect 2015
The Community Connect Fellowship is a service-learning internship for students (high school and college) that runs June 15th – August 16th. Students commit to giving 120 hours of community service and, at the end of the summer, design a capstone project on family homelessness that synthesizes their experiences and, with another fellow, present to a local business.

PHFS provides students with 12 hours of workshops that offer unprecedented access to the nuts and bolts of a nonprofit, including a panel discussion with board members and staff, and fundraising and project management skills. We are also excited to announce that the internship is available for academic credit at the University of Portland.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2015 fellowship. Interested students should fill out the attached application and submit it by 5pm onMonday, May 11th. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and preference will be given to early applicants.

In our inaugural summer last year, four outstanding students had the opportunity to present to Adidas, Elliott Powell Baden and Baker, Curves, and C&R Real Estate, and together donated almost 600 hours of service. Reflecting on her experience last summer, one student wrote,

“I’ve always had those relationships. Being able to foster them in our guests was incredible. After a while, it wasn’t: I’m gonna go volunteer. It became: I’m gonna go see my family.”
