BoyStrength: Portland Police Bureau seeks motivated men to help prevent youth violence
Posted by hannah.cherry
My name is Monae Elliott and I am the Director of BoyStrength. BoyStrength is the Portland Police Bureau’s primary violence prevention program, part of the Bureau’s Family Services Division.
The goal of BoyStrength is to teach communication skills to boys, in order to help reduce dating violence, sexual assault, gang involvement, bullying, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Additionally, this program aims to foster healthy relationships, boundary setting, bystander intervention, and violence de-escalation techniques. The BoyStrength curriculum is also designed to meet state and common core standards for health, physical education and literacy. Since BoyStrength’s inception in 2013, we have served over 200 boys in schools all across the Portland-Metro area.
BoyStrength is 100% volunteer facilitated by men that live in the Portland area. These men come from all walks of life; daycare teacher, chaplain, medical student, and business executive, are a few of the many occupations that our volunteers hold. However, in their free time, these men dedicate themselves in trying to educate a new generation of boys that are compassionate, non-violent, and productive members of society.
